The Perfect Gift - 11/4/2002 16:35:49
Are you stumped for Xmas gifts this year? If so, domain names are a great year round gift. Whenever someone has a baby within our company, I will normally go out and purchase the baby' s domain name as a gift to the parents. For instance, my daughter' s name is Taylor Lewis. I purchased taylorlewis.com for her when she was born. For my sister' s 30th birthday, I purchased her name.com as a gift. They' re inexpensive and very few people would even think of a domain name as a gift. If you haven' t secured your own name.com, you should do so now. Get it before someone else does! If you don' t have a good reputable resource for purchasing domains, feel free to use my online interface. Sorry, didn' t mean for this to be a promotional post. I' ve been an affiliate of my registrar now for over two years and have registered over 1000 domains. Domain Name Registrations P.S. I usually register them under the person' s name as the Registrant and then make myself the Admin, Technical and Billing contacts. As an ongoing gift, I will renew the domain at my cost until such time it is no longer required.

I second this idea. It' s really neat. Several years ago, I registered my grandson' s name and as he grows and I learn web design, he and I will work on his website. One day, he' ll take it over and it will be his for life. I' ve also registered lairdclan.com as a future genealogy site for my whole family to share. I' ll build it and other family members scattered all over can share and even help in the design. Thanks pageone. You' ve given me some really neat Christmas ideas. Dave

That really is a great idea. My daughter (11) is starting to get more into computers and already helps me on our family homepage. I think she would be thrilled with her own domain. Thanks pageone!

Thomas, thanks for mentioning this tip in the newsletter! I' m glad that everyone finds this to be a great idea! This is what I' ll be doing with customer gifts this year. One thing to keep in mind. If the domain is not available in the .com TLD (Top Level Domain) then try some of the others. My first choice after .com is of course .net. After that I look at .us and .info. In addition to securing firstnamelastname.com, you might want to look at firstnamemiddlenamelastname.com as an alternative if the .com is not available. And, if you are feeling generous, get them both. You may even want to consider nicknames like Bob instead of Robert. Be creative, but, make sure you get a domain that they will be proud of once they realize the value of the gift you' ve just given them! P.S. If its a long term gift, which most are, then register for more than one year. With my registrar you can secure a domain for up to ten years. This minimizes the stresses involved with renewing domains every year. Please, make sure to set yourself up as the Admin, Technical and Billing contact. Be sure to set them up as the Registrant. The Registrant is the owner of the domain and has the overall authority on what happens with it. The Admin, Technical and Billing contacts also have authority to do certain things. Be sure to use an email address that isn' t going to expire anytime soon. If your email changes, you need to make sure you update your contact information with your registrar so renewal notices are received in a timely fashion. P.S.S. If you really want to be creative and you have some graphic capabilities, design a certificate and present the recipient with that as documentation of their gift. You can buy certificate papers at any local paper shop and it adds a little more flair to the presentation of the gift.

Great idea Pageon!!! I like that - but have a couple questions. 1. If you purchase the domain name for 1 year for $14.95, do they (registrant) then receive a notice when it' s about to expire? What' s the longest period you can register a domain name for? 2. If someone else ' owns' a domain name that you would like, but their registration expires xx/xx/xx, do they get first dibs or can you ' pre' register it to take it over on the date theirs is to expire? TIA

> 1. If you purchase the domain name for 1 year for $14.95, do they (registrant) then receive a notice when it' s about to expire? What' s the longest period you can register a domain name for? The Registrants have direct access to the database. They all have their own systems for notifying the domain owner of upcoming renewal dates. I usually get emails 45 days in advance of expiration dates with notices to renew. > 2. If someone else ' owns' a domain name that you would like, but their registration expires xx/xx/xx, do they get first dibs or can you ' pre' register it to take it over on the date theirs is to expire? If the domain expires and ends up back in the pool, its a first come, first serve basis. There are services out there that you can pay a one time fee to monitor the domain expiration. I believe snapnames is one of them. Basically you pay the fee, they keep an automated watch on the registry. When that domain expires, they snap it up for you and then it is yours. Problem is, if there are others who are going after the same domain, it all comes down to whose service is quicker on the draw!

Great, thanks Pageone for the answers. Also, you mentioned registering them for 10 years to reduce the hassle basically - how much does that cost? TIA.

> how much does that cost? Its the same whether your register for one year or ten years. I' ve not done a ten year registration yet. With my registrar, you can register for one or two years on the first registration. Once you are set up, you can then go in and renew the domain and extend the registration period up to ten years. It appears that a ten year term is the maximum right now. I just went and tested it on a domain recently registered for two years. The dropdown for the registration period only allowed me to renew for another eight years. P.S. Actually I' m mistaken on the discount. I just went back through some older email notices for registration and my registrar offers discounts on renewals. For example, if I renewed for 9 years, the cost per year dropped to $10.50 as opposed to $14.95. I think the best way to do it is to register for one year. Wait for the renewal notice that offers the discount and then do the extended registration. That could be the gift for next year, extended renewal! ;)

Sorry but you people need to get outside more often. If I gave a member of my family a domain name I' d be sent outside to spend the rest of Xmas[:j]. Pageoneresults is a good guy and has provided some great advice on search engine placement. But Godaddy.com does one year for $8.95 and 10 years for $6.95 if I was crazy enough to give a domain name for a Xmas gift.

> But Godaddy.com does one year for $8.95 and 10 years for $6.95 if I was crazy enough to give a domain name for a Xmas gift. Yup! Godaddy.com has definitely got the market tied up on cheap domains. Unfortunately I was already into a one year affiliation with my registrar and had over 1000 domains registered. Don' t want to go through the process of transferring them all and setting up new accounts, no way! Keep in mind that I' m an IYD affiliate so there is padding in there for my time and efforts in promoting domains. Feel free to register with whomever you wish. Godaddy is a great source and their prices can' t be beat. Proceeds from the sale of domains through my interface go to keeping our SEO Directory running and doing some advertising on the side.

So, does anyone have a site they would like to recommend for buying gifts for Christmas, aside from the usual suspects like Amazon. A rule: No Posting Your Own Site!! This is one I have bought quite a bit from - they have some hard to get elsewhere stuff (especially if you like cooking!) and great customer service. UK based but ship everywhere. http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk
