changing photos after loading site. - 11/5/2002 9:14:23
I have two questions regarding a site that is already published.

What I need to do is go in to the pictures and resize them. They aren' t loading correctly in any of the browsers except for IE6. In Opera and MSN they open up full screen. In IE6, they open up in the upper left hand corner of the screen. How do I go about getting these into photo shop to resize them? Is this possible after the site is loaded?

The second refers to the description of the pics. I have one page where there are spaces between the pics and the description of the pics. How do I go in and change this?

Would appreciate any help that is provided in this matter,:)

I guess posting the site would help?:)

Hi C1,

FP has a resize function. On the photo toolbar it' s the graphic with the four small arrows pointing in at the corners. But that' s only for the individual photos on a page.

Instead, right click on one of the photo galleries, select " photo gallery properties" and when the box comes up, select your photo then click the " edit" tab. This feature gives you the option of cropping or resizing. Try 575 pixels wide and " maintain aspect ratio" , save it and preview it to see if that' s about the size picture you want to display.

As far as the gap is concerned, you have placed a title and a caption for the photos in the photo gallery and it will produce that gap. In properties I eliminate the title and just do a caption.

You should be able to without any problem. I do it all the time.

You just use file > open.

Here' s an interesting thing I' ve found about resizing photos on your hard drive, then uploading the resized photos hoping they overwrite the ones at the site.

When images are resized in another program, FrontPage doesn' t know this. So when they are uploaded again, they don' t overwrite the images already there.

Here' s one of the ways I approach this:

- Manually move the photos out of the webs Images folder, then resize them.

- Republish the web without the photos in the Images folder.

- After republishing, place the photos back in the Images folder and republish again.

A pain, and there may be a better way, but I don' t know it.

As an aside c1sissy, without going into all the technicalities, there is not necessarily a correlation between the size an image appears on a monitor and the actual physical size it may print out. Before doing any editing of a digital photo you should view it at 100%. You' ll be surprised at how big it can appear on a computer screen. Then adjust it to an acceptable visual size prior to uploading.

Hope some of this makes sense.

gail

[edit] note: do not change the image file names if you use the above method, and always put the images back in the same exact folder. ALSO, if you' re using FrontPage to generate the photo album it creates it' s own set of folders for images: one for the large pix and one for thumbnails. check it out.[/edit]

SCREAM!:):)
I still have a space between the pics and the words, even using the caption.!!!

The space is still fairly large. Check out the Colonial Williamsburg page.

I went in and fixed some of the photos that I already had up.

Gail, lol once a bit more familar with files, etc...I' ll attempt the way that you have explained. The explaination and brain overload are mixing together in my head right now.:)

Cissy,

Take a look at www.members.cox.net/davelaird/trains.htm I don' t think you' re going to be able to get rid of that space between the photo and the caption. Unless you can adjust the thumbnail size in the photogallery properties to eliminate it, I suspect it' s probably just a default or built in buffer. You' ll notice that some of my thumbnails are not as " tall" as others and on those the space is greater. That' s what makes me think it' s not adjustable within FP.

Let me know if you can change it.

Dave

CiSissy,

I think Dave is right on this. In galleries where the original images are different sizes - spacing is off.

Only time I have not had a problem is when all the images are the exact size.

Dave:
[:p] Feel better now that I see that I can' t get rid of all of the space! wheww!! I seriously thought that I was doing something wrong.

I love your train pics. My boys were all train lovers. We would go to the Amish Country in Lancaster Pa just so that they could ride the trains up there. Ohio also had somewhere that you could ride the trains.

I' m still working away on the site. I put a different photo gallery on one of the pages just to see how it looks, however I' m not sure if this is how I want it or not. Still deciding.

Am working on the sizes of the pics and they are working out a bit better. Changed the font size and it looks a lot better!

Appreciate Gails help and yours. I' d be lost without it! Also appreciate the time that you are taking to help.

c1sissy,

I' m glad you' re progressing. Lookin' good!

I took another look at your site last night. Your full-sized photos were, as you know, much too big: some were almost six MB and more than 12 x 18" if you were to print them out. Besides difficult to view pix at this size without using a scrollbar, they will take FOREVER to load.

My experience would advise that you do most of the resizing and sharpening of your images FIRST in a photo editing program. Then bring them into FrontPage. FP' s capabilities are simply inadequate for reducing images that large, imho.

I typically use a photo size about +/- 4x6" or 6x4." I first set the pix resolution to 72 dpi, then reduce the physical size. I' ve attached a screen shot of where to tweak image size in Photoshop (sorry about the image quality; had to save at very low quality due to file size restrictions here). Image menu > Image Size.

Gail, thanks for the help, i appreciate it. I' ll remember the resizing in photoshop. I know that it can be done in there and have done this just playing around with things. I guess it just slipped my mind in my zest to publish a page with front page!
