accessing local web server - 11/6/2002 15:37:22
Hi,

I am running windows 2000 Pro and host my site locally for development purposes. Until now I' ve been logging on as administrator and have been able to access my site using http://computername/sitename

I have since created a new user with admin rights and am unable to access it in this way. I can still get it if I go to http://localhost/sitename

Is there a reason for this? Can I change it back?

thanks,

Mark

Have noticed that a few people have read my post and no-one has replied. Either people think I' m daft and shouldn' t be using a computer or they don' t know the answer. Either way, I' ve figured it out for myself and thought I' d post the answer in case anyone else has the same problem.

1. Go to your IIS admin
2. Go to the properties of your default web
3. Under the ' Web Site' tab under the ' Web Site Identification' section click on the ' Advanced' button
4. Choose ' Add' in the ' Multiple identies for this Web Site' section
5. Leave as ' All Unassigned' unless you want to tie it down to a specific IP address
6. Choose port 80 unless you have a good reason to use another
7. Type your computer name in the ' Host Header Name' field.

That ought to do the trick!

Mark

Mark,

Just read both your post - glad you figured it out. FYI, you can always use http://127.0.0.1/sitename or when I' m working on a few sites at once, I make a index and make links to all the sites I' m working on - and click the desktop shortcut to http://127.0.0.1/ then pick the site I want.
