One Site, Two domains, SEs - 11/7/2002 16:38:51
Here is the story.
When setting up a site some time back client and I wanted to register theperfectname.com. Of course it was not available. So we registerd thenextbesthing.com and got on with it.
Then some time later while browsing idly through deleted domains I noticed that the previous day the-perfect-name.com had lapsed, ie the hyphenated version. I bought it. Left things as they were though, because thenextbestthing.com was doing ok and appering well in SEs. Now the site is undergoing a major ovehaul and reorganisation and I was thinking of trying to use the domain.
theperfectname.com is a site selling a similar service, but not the same. Compare it say to a site selling widgets - they sell mass produced alloy widgets, in hundreds of different varieties. We sell one type of widget only but it is handmade in precious metel and aimed at a specialist market.
Within the site there is a fairly well defined and distinct area, which is informative primarily whereas the rest of the site is marketing primarily. That section has its own subsidiarly navigation, though the main nav is still visible along the top.
I was thinking of moving that part of the site to the-perfect-name.com and leaving the rest at thenextbestthing.com but leaving the design of both the same and having them integrate seamlessly.
My only worry is that this will in some way annoy the Google Gods. Would it?

I don' t think it would be a problems at all, as although the design would be the same, the content would change somewhat - and that' s what Google will pick up on. For example we have our English site on one domain and Spanish on another - and it works well for us
Having said that, due to a long list of circumstances, we have two sites which are duplicates on two different domains, it' s been like that for a couple of years, and cos one is doing well in some SEs and the other in Google, we' ve left it as is and there' s been absolutely no penalization at all. I' m not here recommending this in any way, just saying what has happened in this particular case.

Hi,
Going from memory I want to say that content on page has to vary 20% or Google will view it as duplicated.
Sounds like you have nothing to worry about.

abbeyvet, as long as the content is uniquely different and you are removing it from one and transferring it to a new one, there should be no problems. You definitely want to make sure that you don' t duplicate content between the two.
I have many clients who now have multiple Internet properties due to their brick and mortar businesses expanding to cover other products and/or services. When you are working with a site and you find your navigation becoming somewhat overwhelming, its probably time to start thinking about secondary properties.
