Need someone' s help - 11/8/2002 7:01:38
Hello to everyone in OutFront [:p],

I have a question that is probably quite easy to answer.[:j] Here it goes...

How do you make photos or clip art blend in with a background?

Take a look here...click on " See Sample Sites" , and choose a sample...
https://www.verisignwebsites.com

I' m trying to do something like this for one of my websites, but I do not know how to do this. I have a little experience with designing and editing basic graphics (i.e buttons, headers, photos etc.), but that' s about it :). I have Paint Shop Pro 7. Can this be done in PSP 7?

Hope someone can help. It' s been a hassle for me trying to figure it out by myself:):):).

Regards,
Rio :)

In PSP 7 you use Selections>Modify>Feather and from the dialogue box you can decide how much feathering.

Now, a question, and I' ll bet Nancy can answer this:

I can' t perform this function because everything is greyed out in my Selections tab. What' s up? I' ve noticed this before.

Make sure the image is active--click on it. then try the selections. I have never had the selection tool greyed out like that unless the image isn' t active...I have found that it' s usually something simple that keeps me from doing things (like I need to " Convert to Raster Layer" to apply certain effects).

You may find some help with on the Jasc website--they have a lot of useful tutorials. You could also go here to the PSP User' s Group...they' re as helpful with PSP as Outfronters are with FrontPage.

http://www.pspug.org/

Also, here is a great resource of PSP Tutorials--the website is searchable, so if you want to find a particular effect you could type it in the search box and a list of appropriate tuts will come up:

http://www.psplinks.com/

I have several tut links for PSP, but the above two, as well as the Jasc Website Learning Center (http://www.jasc.com) are the onesI use the most.

Well, here' s a very easy trick to do in PSP or any other image editing program.

Create another layer above the present one. Use your paint brush to paint a white area to the left, right, top or bottom. On the Layers Window, simply drag the contrast bar from 100% to whatever gives you the desired effect. Presto! Instant fading.

Make sure you are on the proper layer (can' t feather something that isn' t there!)... and make sure the image is set up for 16M colors...

You may not be able to use the feather tool on a .gif, for example, you have to paste the .gif image into a new layer in a PSP image, fade, then export again as .gif

Play around with the amount of feathering as well... you might notice that it looks really bad if you take it just one step too far in a .gif (only 256 colors, can' t support a lot of transparency levels)

It' s similar to the difference between 70% opacity on a drop shadow... which can look bad in .gif. On the other hand, if you make it 100% opacity and select a lighter shade of grey it looks dandy!

Okey Dokey. What the heck is the proper layer? What do I have to do to a photo to produce the proper layer to feather it?

I have played and played with this but I can' t get it.

Well, this is what I do: I click the image to make it active. A photo is usually only one layer unless you' ve been doing other things to it. Pick the selection tool, and choose how much feathering you want. Select the part of the image you want then COPY then PASTE as a new layer onto a new image that has the same background color as your page/table/cell whatever...) Then merge all, flatten. Then optimize it.

I don' t mean for this to sound insulting, but just to be certain: Did you make a selection first?

You have to have something selected first before you can modify the selection.

Actually to make the effect you' re after, it might be better to apply a mask. I looked for a tutorial for using masks, but didn' t find a decent one. I don' t use PSP much any more, especially for masks, because they are so much easier in Photoshop.

I' ll post a link for masks if I find a good one.

--------

I found one that explains masks pretty good.

http://www.niagara.com/~theshack/tutorials/masks/masks.html

For the faded look, follow the above tutorial, and just make a gradient mask, using black and white. If you surf around some of the PSP sites, there are usually plenty to download, and I thought PSP also came with several.

I know absolutely nothing about PSP but here' s what I found in Photoshop. For a few of the questions asked here, the solution may be to add a transparent layer.

Sometimes when you open an image it opens as a background layer, which is locked. When this occurs, menus are usually grayed out. If I want to do something with the image, I " select all" and " cut" it, add a *new* layer, then " paste" onto the new layer. Menus should now be accessible for your image once its layer is selected.

Sometimes I also use the suggestion by peppargal to " Convert to Raster Layer."

Thanks Nancy. And everyone.

I guess the most frustrating thing about so many tutorials is the fact that you follow every step to the letter and then you get to point " x" and something doesn' t match, the explanation they give doesn' t match what you have, their description of a dialogue box looks nothing like what yours does, etc. etc. There is always a glitch of some type.

Paint Shop Pro is the most frustrating program I have ever seen and Nancy knows I' ve been struggling with it for over two years. I guess my little " receptors" just don' t line up with the whole banana.

But then, at 6 foot six, I' ll never be a gymnast either. :)

What version are you using? I know there are some changes between version 5.5 (or is it just 5) and version 7. If you' re reading a tutorial for 7 while using version 5 then you would certainly have some minor discrepancies. I' ve been able to use tuts for other versions (I use PSP7) but sometimes I can' t; I just look for a tut on version 7.

Really...I urge you to join the PSP Users Group. They have folks who are PSP experts and who use different versions of the software. It is one of the best resources for PSP I have found....while the format of the message board forum is clumsy compared to this one, it' s still a great forum.

Hi Peppergal. I started out with v6 and I' ve been using seven for over a year now.

I' ve been to the PSP Users Group and another called PSP Interactive Zone. I' ve also got a million other tutorial sites for six and seven in my favorites.

What I need to do is just sit down and learn it, once and for all. Seems like everytime I set aside a period to devote to learning PSP, something else comes along. (I' m sure no one else has that problem :))

What I have learned with PSP, I love. It' s a lot of fun.

Wait a minute. Maybe I just like to gripe a lot. :):)

Hi again,

After a day or two looking at the links provided on this post, I now have a fair idea of how to fade a picture into a background, use masks, etc. I now have an easier question for you all.

Please take a look a this link ( http://www.instantwebincomesites.com/create1.html ). I' ve been trying to figure out what is used to create this. Do I use masks, feathering or what?

Again, any help would be grateful.

Regards,

Rio
