Bad Hair Day? - 11/9/2002 18:35:30
I created a site for a Salon. Give it to me straight. Please provide me with any comments that will improve this web. Thanks in advance for your insight.

The home page is a tad bit...unsettling? I don' t know. I like the colors together, but I think it' s too " much" black. There should be a little more there than just the logo; perhaps a picture of the salon itself and some introductory information--like one or two sentences summing it up?

The inside looks really really nice; the only thing that I didn' t care for was the staff bio pages; their pictures seemed too far from the text in my opinion.

Overall, it' s very stylish and elegant; nice job!

Since I' m well known for my honesty here, I can' t agree. In my opinion it is a decent job. Why? There' s one thing I simply do not get from this site - Carters Salon itself.

Here' s the opening statement on the services page (which I think should be on the home page).
quote:

Carter' s Salon is a peaceful nurturing retreat...The atmosphere is calm, friendly...

Peaceful and nurturing is something I do not get when I view the site. Web sites should be extensions of the actual business if they have a physical location. I don' t consider black and gray/grey peaceful nor nurturing, calm or friendly.

Have you been to their office? Have you taken notice of the colors and ' nurturing environment' in the salon itself? What about the colors and feel of the exterior?

I also feel the top border takes up entirely too much space. And I really don' t see the need to have the same logo twice on any page.

My 2 cents plus a nickel for effort.

I don' t know, Seventh....I find black a calming color, depending on how it' s used. Friends of ours have a huge bathroom that' s mostly black -- black tile floors, walls tiled halfway with black and pearly grey deco tiles; black tub, creamy walls (above the tiles), and soft grey towels, few brassy accents (faucets, towel bars, etc...)... and all I want to do when I go there is draw a hot bath in their garden tub with jacuzzi jets and soak for hours...surrounded by candles, of course.

If black is with red, orange, yellow, or bright green I find it scary (think Amityville Horror or Halloween), or too stark, or bold and brash--but with soft greys and creamy whites I find it a soothing color. Maybe I' m weird.

(no comment please, LOL)

Thanks for your comments. My client loves the color scheme. I too, think the home page needs something. I think a photo might be a little out of place but there is a graphic they have that could be used there as well.

I agree with the layout of the photos on the Bios pages, but what other suggestions for positioning do you have?

I would have the text tighter up to the picture, like you have on the " Services" page, with the group photo of everyone.

I agreed with the space between the text and picture. Is left aligning, my only option? I suppose so...

Okay...I won' t comment.

My point exactly. I probably should have stated the I don' t see the calming and nurturing factor in this site using black and gray.:)

Again, this is only my opinion.:)

With the best will in the world Seventh, I kind of doubt you are square in the middle of the demographic they are aimed at :)

I like the colors.
The emptyness of the home page is not really the problem I think, it is the lack of symmetry.

Even where a layout is not obviously symetrical our eye expects to follow lines and is jarred by the lack of them.

So on this page there are two many edges that do not relate to each other, the stuff at the top does not relate to the white bar at the bottom, the words in white do not relate to either the edges of the image above or to the bottom of the menu bar, thus the effect is that they all sort of landed on the page randomly.

I would try making the gold image wider, so that the words in it had more space around them and that it extended to the right edge. I would right align the white text and make sure it aligned with the bottom of the menu bar. I might also consider putting a little color in the white bar at the bottom and, sorry about this, reduce the designed by link which takes from the line at the bottom. I would just have ' Design by Nevis Technology Solutions" with the name clickable and all on one line.

An image would help, but I think that without addressing the layout thing it will look like something else that just dropped in.

I appreciate the comments about the home page. I am not satisfied with it myself. I will make some design changes soon and post it for critique again. Thank you very much for you time and careful comments.

How about a large pair of silver scissors (stylishly sleek and artistic kind of graphic), with a link on the home page only (under said scissors) to the customer of the month. Drawing in-house only, free prize could differ each month. How about a beauty makeover with the photo of the previous winner? Add something for people to come back to look at from time to time (not to mention the winner giving the link to their family/friends), plus additional business for you in updating it! [:p]

Okay... so much for an unasked for promotional idea...

Definitely take out the white box of text (bottom include or shared border) on the home page if you' re going all black.

Linda
