" Locking" photos so they can' t be copied.... - 11/10/2002 15:17:11
I' m not aware of any way (at least easy way) to " lock" photos in a site so that they can' t be copied, but I' m hoping that someone here has an answer as to how.
I have something around 2000 photos on my website (www.bassboatcentral.com) and I' ve never had a reason to be concerned with someone copying photos, now have a reason ;)
I just went to a website to copy photos (as requested) and add them to my site, and I can' t copy them. The website is: www.blazerboats.com and it' s the 2002 Tournament Results page.
Any suggestions? Thanks.....

Which one can you not copy?

I tried several and had no problem.

Well that' s really strange.....I just went in there again....opened up a couple of the thumbnails and copied the pics, brought them over to my FrontPage and only end up with the " redX" in a small box. I' ve never
had this happen before. Picked up one of their boat pics and their logo,
no problem at all. I don' t get it......
Anyway, back to my question....is there a way (simple I hope) to " lock" my photos (at least future ones; I' m not going back and doing it to 2000 photos ;) ? Thanks.......

Nope, there is no way.

If it is on the web it can be taken.

Katherine is absolutely correct that there is nothing that can be done to prevent photos from being copied. But there are certain steps that can be taken to provide some form of protection.

A lot on this subject can be learned at dpreview.com, particularly in the Pro Digital Talk forum. It is quite an active forum so you may need to do a search. Or sign up to also ask your question there. The help and feedback is excellent and thorough for digital photography and related matters.

Thanks Gail....I' ll check out that site. I was 99% sure that there was no way to " lock" photos, but thought it was worth asking the question.
Take care........

AIS, if your time permits, let us know if you find anything useful so other Outfronters can benefit. Tech stuff changes every day and the sharing of info can, quite often, put you light years ahead than going it on your own.

Good luck,

One thing you might like to consider is watermarking your photos. It won' t stop people copying them but will show where they got them from.

Unfortunately, that will do little more than make the ' gifted' graphic artist work a few more minutes than normal. I can de-watermark an image in under 3 minutes. Usually just applying a mask and then applying a highlighted contrast. Actually quite simple to do.

I know I can do it because someone posted this question in another forum and he dared the group to copy it and post it. I replied within 5 minutes (and others within seconds of my post) and he was pissed to say the least.

Hey, if you build a better mousetrap, a smarter mouse will beat it.

*NOTE: I only did this to prove a point to the person that posted the question. I do not infringe on anyone' s copyrighted work unless given permission to do so.

Some photos I cannot save, but I can save the backround, and other photos I can save.

The key words here are: ' gifted' graphic artist. Out of all the people who might steal photos and pass them off as their own - how many would fit that description? My suggestion was intended only to reduce the likelihood not eliminate it altogether.

How secure are the locks on your front door? Lots of people could pick them if they so desired, but they don' t and your current security keeps the masses out. The fact that someone might pick them, is no reason to not use a lock at all and therefore invite all the burglars to walk right in.

I don' t think this has to come down to a debate. Both sides are really correct.

I' m certainly not a gifted graphic artist, but even I can get rid of a watermark. It doesn' t take a " gifted" burglar to pick a lock, either. The point of a lock is not to keep a thief out, but to keep an honest man honest. It really depends on how much you don' t want your work copied and how badly you think others might want to copy it to determine whether or not you will want to spend the time watermarking your photos.

So, if you really don' t want to take the time to watermark your photos, if it isn' t worth it to you, then don' t. If a little added security is important to you, then you may want to.

Even though it is far from fool-proof, I think it' s a lot better than doing something like disabling the " right-click" button....
