No access to a Mac . . . - 11/12/2002 7:13:32
I recently redesigned my home page using FrontPage and CSS. I have tested this page using numerous versions and types of Windows based browsers; however, because I designed this page using CSS for layout instead of tables, I am extremely interested in how this page looks in a Mac browser--particularly IE 5.x for the Mac. Do you have access to a Mac? Can you take a few screen shots for me or just let me know if there are any obvious problems? Screenshots can be sent to: webmaster@swfwmd.state.fl.us.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the link:

Thanks!

Hi, Crispy -

Have you had any direct response to this? It' s usually best to have responses put on the thread so all can follow along... this lets others all learn at the same time (such as if there were or weren' t problems in Mac), and also lets us know if you haven' t had any help yet. :)

Would love to see someone answer... the burning question on the pc-format only webmaster' s mind: what does it look like on a mac? I' ve actually considered getting a mac just to be able to check sites on it.

Linda

Hi Linda:

No, I didn' t get any responses to this inquiry; however, I did post a similar request in a separate, earlier thread and got several comments that had nothing to do with and completely ignored my request for a browser check.

But the good news is, I found a wonderful mailing list where the users are more than happy to provide screenshots and helpful advice regarding pure CSS layouts like mine. Go to this page and subscribe:

http://two.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/css-discuss

I am also happy to report that, after endless testing and tweaking, my design checks out in all the major browsers, including the Macs. My newly designed (no tables) home page is now in production and you can see it here:

http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us

I have now started converting the rest of my web site to table-less W3C web standards compliancy. I have created a CSS template for my web site and have already converted several more pages--although they are not on-line just yet.

I have over 1,000 pages to convert so this is going to take a while. I am still using FrontPage to manage my site, but require Macromedia Home Site to do most of the heavy-duty coding. I also use TopStyle for the CSS coding.

Congrats! :)

So glad you were able to find some people to help you out on that. Congrats on the new format for the site and good luck with the conversion. We don' t often get Mac users here... I know of one or two though and was going to rack my brain to remember just who if you still needed them.

Thanks for the mailing list link.

Linda
