.htm vs. .html? - 11/16/2002 0:58:51
This may sound like a ridiculous question, but I have to ask anyway. What is the difference between an .htm & an .html file?

I' m creating a basic personal web site with approx. 5 pages total. I of course saved my home page as index.html. What file extention should I save the remaining pages in? .htm or .html?

Thank you to all that reply!

i Would have thought it made no difference. As long as you always have index.html, any web server should find your main page.
Most editors will save your pages as .htm

I was just wondering if I was making a big boo-boo.

Example: Save As

I manually typed in links.html

Thanks for your reply!

index.html is standard with Apache and other web servers. MS web servers usually have default.htm as the starting page. Most web servers are configured to treat .htm and .html files the same way.

index.html is not the standard it may be that there are over 50% of the Apache servers that are set to look for index.html ---

It is important that you ask your webhost what extension they are looking for, what the server was set to look for, or let FP name your homepage. Right-click and select " Set as HomePage" this will ensure that you have the right file name...

Otherwise you can use .htm or .html for pages that are HTML

Sorry jay, but it has been the standard since I' ve been on (1991 when it was released by CERN) - The only reason there ever was a .htm is because Windows (IBM PCs) were not able to parse a proper extension of more than 3 characters. I remember having to FTP my files as .htm and then telenet to change them to HTML so they would work.

Standard may not be the word that I should have used...perhaps I should say this...

The standard extension for a file that is HTML is .html but since the onset of .htm, it does not behoove one to assume that the index or home page should have .html and that clarification would....

I agree - " assume" is not something one should ever do when writing code :)

I find it really strange that server admins do not automaticly configure a server to accept either .html or .htm, it only takes a few seconds....

I know - I guess we just have to chalk it up to " just one of those things"

Thanks for all of the replies.

My home page is set as index.html...

The question I had, was whether or not it made any difference or not if the the remainder of the pages within my web had the file extention .htm or .html.

I' ve just been manually saving them as .html.

Examples: links.html and dedications.html, etc.,

I was just curious because I' ve seen .htm on various web site pages. I don' t even want to venture into what .asp is all about yet. I' ll just stick to the basics. [:p]

Thanks again!
