Not standard so feedback welcomed - 11/18/2002 11:23:38
I saw the comments good and bad of other sites so I open my self up for feedback on this site . www.international-export-thailand.com
I approached some designers with my requirements and was amazed at the prices WOW. So Iam attempting it myself.

Once the " feel" for the site is done I will attempt to add a shopping cart.

Looking forward to any comments on it so far (though I work on it mostdays so it may well change as I go along) The carving thumbnails and some of ceramics are working.

Hi Alastair and welcome,

Just a few comments, I like the menu concept, nice and simple. I personally am not a fan of scrolling text, I think you can accomplaish the same thing with a static text box (MHOO). On your catalog pages, I would suggest making them longer to avoid the side to side scroll required for the thumbnail sections. As for the thumbnail links, in keeping with the black background, you might consider keeping the left and right cells as black (somehow it looks a bit off with the white like that). I noticed a thin break between section of the images when they first loaded also. This went away on refresh. If the size can be kept down maybe you don' t need to slice the images. These are just a few thoughts for what they' re worth. You have a good start.

Hi Mike
I hate scrolling text as well, but with the lengeth of the sentence if I put it in static it pushes the opening graphic off the page. Any ideas?

I will change the product view page to black on a couple of products and then forum visitors can compare it. (Ceramics product CR002 and Carvings product CA0016)

I dont like the IE scroll bars as they are, and would prefer a java scroll bar that isn' t so intrusive but havent had much success so far. I have to have 2 sides so that I can effectively have 2 sub catagories, and with the number of products envisaged its the only way I can get them in.

Great start , and quick, I thought I was the only one working in the small hours. Many thanks. Ali

Welcome to OutFront, alastair! Here' s what I see.

#1. Not sure what font you chose for the top navigation but it is kinda illegible. Verdana, Arial, and other sans-serif fonts would present a better screen appearance.

#2. In your product sections, I think your purpose would be best suited to put the image you have in the middle to the far left and use that space to view the product line. It seems a little confusing the way you have it set up now.

Hi Alastair!

I found your site a bit confusing. I think it needs some basic restructuring so that a user can more easily navigate.

Did you setup the homepage using tables? If not, that would help keep things in place so your graphic doesn' t push off the page.

A couple of other notes:
1. Text is too close to the edge of the screen on home page, same with the left category box.
2. Font - I agree with Seventh, use a sans-serif font like arial or verdana
3. I also agree with Seventh that the layout would be better with the item shown on the left/description right.
4. The horizontal scroll I do not like. Vertical would be more standard. At first I couldn' t figure out how to get to CA0016.
5. I would rather scroll downward for an extra category than have them setup the way you do. Or instead maybe you need to rethink your top navigation in some way to include multiple categories?
6. Don' t forget your copyright statement!

Hope this helps!
Linda

Hi Seventh and Linda, many thanks.
You both mention the font and I am confused as it is ariel 6pt bold. I have ajusted my " View Text" in IE to smallest and I can still read ok? Normally its set to Medium.
I have taken on board that the home page and catagory pages are to close to the left and have changed index and ceramics to see.the results.

I will keep the two sides in the catagory/catalogue pages but was forced to scroll left to right because using two sides the IE bars are unsightly.
I took the idea for the site from www.balinesia.net which is good as it is inter browser. Also the scroll bars are java but try as I might I can' t do it, ummmm. If I could then top to bottom is better. If not what about me putting arrows ?
Thanks for info, Adapt adopt improve
Ali

Can' t say I like that one much better. The font at 6pt ARIAL Bold is still illegible. The minimum is usually 10pt for sites as some will have difficulty reading anything under that on screen. Though it may look perfect to you...I see small bold yellow text on a black background. But hey, it' s your site.

Alistair,

Ok, sometimes I wish I never found this forum.....I end up playing with other peoples sites when I should be working on my own...LOL [:p]

This is what I envision as a fix for your site....
http://www.long2consulting.com/IET/index.htm
http://www.long2consulting.com/IET/page2.htm

I tried to rearrange the top so that the layout was a bit cleaner and the font size could be increased. Also, I worked on layout for the second page, maybe now you can see what I mean about two categories on top of each other....this allows you to put the item on the right.

If you want what I started....let me know and I will send you a zip of my files.
:) Linda

Have redone the text and top nav bar. Hope you can read them now. Previously I had ment that the fonts I had used HAD been ariel.

Oooh bad day :) Hope this is better. I removed one " button" to give me the space.
Thanks Linda for putting your time to doing the pages. I removed the logo from the top as it seemed like wasted space then moved the top nav to the bottom (I added yours to the link so that it could be compared, sort of) Are you and seventh using 1024 x 768?

I still want to be able to have the pages with out having to scroll to fit (not talking about the catalogue pages) maybe the road to go would be to use script to force full screen?

Catalogue page Linda, yes can see what you mean. Scrolling down yes, just want a neat way to present it. Did anybody look at www.balinesia.net ?

Also the copyright is done.
Anyway done some improvments so far

Cheers
Ali
