404 file not found - 11/20/2002 21:31:10
I' ve been running an IIS server on my Windows 2000 Advanced Server (with Active Directory) for a few years now. Recently, I started working with ASP pages at work - so I thought it would be cool to do so at home also. I' ve been developing in Frontpage 2000. I downloaded all the ASP.NET Framework and SDK and everything needed. When I run the ' detection utility' from the ASP.NET website - it says that I have everything installed. My problem is - when I try to access any .ASP pages - I get a 404 error. The files are in the exact same directory as my other web files. I cannot find out what I' m doing wrong. I checked the properties of IIS and SCRIPTS are allowed to run. At one time, I had downloaded a program from Microsoft (URL BLOCKER I believe) and that was supposed to stop scripts from running on the server. I have since disabled that -- and it does not make a difference. The odd thing is the error of " FILE NOT FOUND" -- I can see an access issue - but it does not seem to find the file. Just for kicks - I created a link to the files off my webpage - and it will not follow the link either! When I set this up on a new server at work - it worked fine - no glitches at all. I' ve even talked to a friend who was running an IIS server at home - and he didn' t download any of the ASP.NET framework (this was 2 years ago) and he was able to run ASP pages with no problems at all! If anyone is interested - the file is located at www.currans.net\search.asp (or results.asp) - if you want to view the link - go to the main page - then games - then click on the 2 links. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Mark C (Welby)

I get an object disabled error message, its not the browser. Are you trying to create mime type objects?

All that I' m trying to do is create a Search Page on a SQL server (running on the same box). The other Link (www.currans.net/results.asp) is just a dbrw created results page. Thanks - Welby

turn off " show friendly error messages" in IE and see what the error is. Dave

That' s how I' ve got my browser at work setup - and I still get that same error. MY browser at home is most likely not setup that way and maybe that' s why I get the " page not found" error. I' ve given rights to the database and table for my IUSR acct. So, I don' t think it' s a rights issue either. Welby

Spooky -- the link didn' t help much -- but it did make me think about the IISLockdown tool. Luckily, I still had the executable sitting in my temp directory, and when you run that it says " Hey, you' ve already run this, do you want to run it again, and remove everything" -- I did that -- then ran it one more time and locked it down the way I wanted (to allow ASP pages) and now it works fine! Thank Spooky. Welby
