domain name with hypens - 11/21/2002 16:55:37
Any thoughts about using hyphens in domain names?
Can' t get the .com name a customer wants; I don' t like to recommend hyphens but may have no other choice.

Mixed feelings. Oe of our domain names is hyphenated, and it messes people up, but only once, and usually only over the phone. It' s not keyword packed or a version of someone else' s URL, it' s an old company abbreviation.
We promote the hell out of the domain name, so most visitors have seen it in print, and a lot come to us via the search engines. Once a visitor is at your site, they' l usually bookmark it if it' s worth it.
My concern would be the confusion with a competitor. If I sell web widgets, and my domain name is webwidgets.com, and you sell web widgets, and your domain name is web-widgets.com, I think a lot of your promotional effort will bring confused visitors to my site. Sometimes, though, I guess you just have to do your best and make sure your customer promotes their URL well.
As for SEs, I honestly don' t think they care one way or the other.

I try to avoid them, but if it is required I try to get a name that is unique and also represents the company/site.

Employer' s company name is hyphenated in print. We definitely don' t want other people confusing our customers. We registered both hyphenated and un-hyphenated.
Still, a derivative of our name is registered to the GM of a Bigfoot store in eastern Kentucky. I don' t know why -- they' ve never contacted us to " sell" the name, and the site is laying uncreated. Then again, I didn' t like their Bigfoot when I was in it once, so maybe they' re keeping their options open.

I have just gone through this with a client. Ultimately it was the client' s decision to go with the hyphen. I concurred with them since they are the ones paying for it and must live with it.
