last changed date - 11/22/2002 8:22:15
I had and unfortunately lost a cool little command you can type in the address bar while on any webpage that would show the last date that page was changed. Is anyone aware of this? I' d be very appreciative.
TIA,

I think this explains it:
http://www.ticino.com/usr/tanya/Faq.htm#Last%20modified%20date%20&%20time

Open the page you wish to check;
In the address bar where you usually enter the Web site URL, type the following:

javascript:alert(document.lastModified)

without spaces and hit Enter. A window will pop up, telling you the time and date when the page was last revised.

Hi erinatkins,

Me too, I would like to target my second question to you. Do you know any other useful java commands to put in the address bar?

Thanks
Hisham

Great little script. This also works to make it easier to use.

Assuming you are in IE, after you enter the script into the addressbar and use it, drag the IE icon to the links bar and rename the link something like " Last Change" . Than you only have to click once to get the date and time of the last change for the current page pop up in your screen.

You' ll find lots of useful " bookmarklets" at http://www.bookmarklets.com/tools/categor.html

What is a " bookmarklet" ?
A bookmarklet is a tiny program (a JavaScript application) contained in a bookmark/favorite (the URL is a " javascript:" URL) which can be saved and used the same way you use normal bookmarks/favorites.

This is very neat, but on many pages I get the current time.

Ex:
www.hawleycooke.com
www.courierjournal.com
www.amazon.com
www.indiana.edu/~wmhome/tool_guide_info/errorcodes.shtml

I don' t think those docs were saved THAT recently. Can anyone explain?

I' m with YZ on this one. This is a great tip, BUT.....on some sites I get back the current date / time, even on sites that obviously haven' t been updated in ages. Anyone have any idea why?

Probably a dynamically generated page - one written " on the fly" by ASP, Perl, PHP, etc.

You probably all know this one, but just in case ---
On most search engines (google, altavista, yahoo, etc.) you can enter the link command to determine the links to a website.
The command format is link: www.domaniname.xxx
As an example link: www.outfront.net
On many major search engines you can augment the command to eliminate the domain you are checking on (or any domain for that matter).
As an example link: www.outfront.net -url: www.outfront.net

You probably know some search engines today (such as google) consider relevance links as very important. This command can help you determine what links are recognized into a given website on a given search engine.

Hope this is useful to someone!
