Never used PS but like the others it should have a preferences or options section which lets you set file associations. Perhaps some other program you used unchecked it in Photoshop and you' ll need to reset it

Yes, you should! How are you trying to open the gifs? Do other programs recognize them?

Are you trying to open gifs you downloaded from America Onlie? For some quirky reason, sometimes gifs and jpgs downloaded via AOL are not recognized by other programs. There' s a workaround but I won' t go into it unless AOL is the problem.

It' s not from AOL but thanks! They are just from various sites I surf on MSN.
But all I do is open Photoshop, then click Open and none of the gifs I have saved on my hard drive even show up to open so I don' t know.

Thanks for replying but how do I reset the file permissions or how do you at least do it in the program you use? Maybe it' s universal?

This doesn' t make sense.

How are you saving them? Right-clicking then " save picture as?" Then are you sure you' re saving the file type as " gif."

Let me also ask you a very basic question. Where are you saving the images too? Do you know where on the hard drive they' re being saved and, if so, are you navigating to that place using the " look in" drop down menu at the top of the " Open" dialog box?

Ariel, can you please clarify your question? I use Photoshop 7.0. With regard PS, what do you mean by file permissions? Or do you mean file associations? If the latter, please DON' T PLAY with changing file associations until you are sure you know how to do. There are several ways to go about it including through a Windows control panel.

And at this point, I' m not sure that' s your problem, though it may be.

Tell me about it! Sorry if what I' m saying is hard to understand as it' s just as confusing to me.

Yes, I just right-click on them on the site and click " Save Picture As"

Yes, I save it as a gif

Where are you saving them to?

I save them to a folder for my webpaging class called " Webpaging" on my C drive and that' s the directory I go to to find them but when I do, they don' t show up even thought it specifies " All File Types" in the look-in box and when I click the drop-down arrow, " gif" is not even listed as one of the types so like I said, I have no idea.

Thanks so much for your help though! Hopefully we can figure something out! By the way, how' s your graphic problem going? Didya figure it out?

Well, can you see the gifs when you open the directory.

Just for the heck of it, try this. Drag and drop the images into the My Pictures folder in your My Documents folder. Then navigate there via Photoshop to try to open them.

If this doesn' t work, do me a favor before you play with file associations. Email me one of the gifs so I may take a look at it.

Well this much needed area of study for me was interrupted by a new website job :). It will have to be set on the back burner a while more.

I' m still trying to locate a tutor in my area who will give me some lessons. I may even prance around the block and stick up an ad on the wall of the community college campus. Perhaps a student there is advanced in Photoshop and will be available and wants to make a few extra bucks. I' m a part-time student there so have access to the computer labs.

Thanks for asking.

Gail

Give this a shot too. Restore your Photoshop preference file according to Adobes help file:

To restore all preferences to their default settings:

Do one of the following:

Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop or ImageReady. You will be prompted to delete the current settings.

In Mac OS, open the Preferences folder in the System Folder (Mac OS 9.x) or Library folder (Mac OS X), and drag the Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings folder to the Trash.

You have the " spookiest" gifs I' ve ever heard of. :) I' m sort of at a loss as to what to advise. But let' s try a few other things.

After you open Photoshop, jump over to ImageReady. The gif that you sent me to look at is animated, though it still should be recognized by PS (even if PS won' t open totally as it will in ImageReady).

And here' s another long shot.

When you have the Open dialog box open, check the horizontal scroll bar along the bottom of the screen. Slide it slowly to the right and to determine if you can locate the gif. In otherwords, are you looking at everything you have it the Webpaging folder.

Ariel, if none of the above work, give me a little more info. Can you open the gif with any other graphic program? Tell me what happens when you double-click on one of the gifs, such as the one you sent me.

In case anyone hasn' t helped you... I can help from the PC side of things (I' m not sure about file associations on the Mac platform).

To reset filetype associations:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Go to Tools, then pick Folder Options.
3. Click on the File Types tab
4. Look for GIF under the Registered File Types list. If you don' t find it, you can add it.
5. If it' s on the File Types list, click it, then click the Change button.
6. Then choose Photoshop for the application to use.
7. Save your settings.

If you don' t have GIF as a file extension, add it by clicking the New button, type in the extension, then select " Open With" and select Photoshop.

Thanks for all the help guys! I finally just uninstalled Photoshop 5.5, upgraded to 6.0 and installed it, and it works like a charm!
