It really looks nice!:) The fox is so much clearer. I' m glad Gail could help!

Sometimes redoing graphics, touch ups, etc. can be a lot of work.

Thanks - I like it so much better. I am extremely grateful to have posted this one for suggestions and glad it caught Gail' s sharp eye! It is a pretty special historical place and I am proud of how it turned out.

Hear that Gail? THANK YOU IN A BIG WAY!!:):):):)

:) I' m sorry I made such a fuss over the original fox, but I really do think the sharper redo looks much better. Before it was just blurry...looking at the comparison before the old and new there is a definite difference.:):)

I think the site really does look nice, simple yet elegant..." Old World Style" so to speak....very nice! It looks like it would be a nice place to visit.

Believe me, this post was NOT written all in one sitting. Much has been gleaned from lessons I' ve written for my students.

Rsweb, there is no need to apologize for having a different opinion about the original fox! When it comes to aesthetics, there is no one right way to approach things. Something you may not have realized is that enlarging an image can sometimes actually make it look worse.

shawna, you are very welcome. The help that has been given is nothing compared to the help others have provided me. I do love your willingness to learn and enthusiasm.

I know nothing about PhotoImpact but curious soul that I am, downloaded the 30 day free trial. Though it is different in many ways, it has similar features to Photoshop which I' ve been using forever.

Since you said you are new to graphic programs, I thought to share some of the features I use most when manipulating images. Ironically, they represent only about 10% of the program features but I use them 80% of the time.

If you are not familiar with some of these features and have time to learn them, it will be well worth your effort.

In addition to the Help Menu, your best " friends" in an Image editing program are the Undo command and the History panel (in PhotoImpact, I think it' s the History Commands in the Quick Command Panel). If you don' t like something you' ve just done, undo it. Oh, don' t forget to always work on copies rather than original images.

So, here' s my " most used" list, in no special order:

- Selection tools, including the Magic Want

- Text tool

- Crop tool

- Unsharp Mask

This is one of the effects I used this to tweak the Fox. You have to be very careful not to overdo sharpening.

Effect menu > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask) For more control, when the Unsharp Mask window is open, click the Options tab)

I typically use these ranges in Photoshop:

Radius .03 - .09

Amount 100 - 200

Threshold - 0 - 2

- Format menu - Brightness and Contrast, Color Balance, Hue and Saturation controls

- Transform tool - to reduce/enlarge the size of an image, etc.

- Clone tool

---------------

One more thought. You mentioned you may eventually get another photo editing program. If so, I highly recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements; many individuals in these forums use a program called Paint Shop Pro. The reason I suggest one of these is that if you need help with a program feature, it is more readily available. Don' t misunderstand me, I have Ulead Products and like them a lot. Ulead has great tutorials at their website for each of their products so you may with to check it out.

ps particularly on the home page, have you tried what it looks like without the double lines around the main body text? :)

Yes, I am aware that enlarging can make it worse, generally I' ve found it does. However, I didn' t know when I mentioned it what the original graphic size was...thought maybe it started out larger...from what was later described that was not the case.

I agree that forums are very helpful for site design and graphic design. I haven' t had much chance to visit graphic forums, visited the About one a couple of times but just haven' t had the time. I might have to check out the one you mentioned. I use Paint Shop Pro.:):)

Thanks for the tips, Gail! I printed that section out for future use and learning.

I have much more to learn with Photo Impact. If you plan on keeping it - there is a wonderful site at www.eastofthesun.com and then go into her bulletin board. The site owner' s name is Stephanie and she wrote several tutorial books for Ulead PI and the board is terrific for graphic help, ideas and downloads. I just haven' t found much time to learn more about graphics but I really need to. It seems as soon as I get a site done, someone else is calling or wanting one - so my spare time to experiment is gone. Mind you, I' m not complaining about being busy :) but I never have the extra time to play with graphics.

I have a meeting with a guy this afternoon that wants a site for his home business, but also wants to talk to me about creating small graphic ads for use on other websites for himself and others. I will have to play that by ear as I hear what it all entails and although I' m sure I will take him up on it for the income, I will REALLY have to learn more. That' ll be a miracle in itself!!

I' ll have to try the site without the lines around it. I was thinking except for the menus. Again, I was afraid it was too blah and was trying to put in a dab of color somewhere so I tried it that way.

Thanks again for the tips and especially for fixing my little fox and letting me use him after you sharpened him up! That was really nice of you to do that! Wish you lived here :) and could be my mentor / teacher, too.

Debbie

Thanks for the compliment Pacific

My husband bought me a HP (Hewlett Packard) last year for Christmas and I like the way the photos come out ..... BUT, they get enhanced with this free software I downloaded from this site. It is wonderful and does everything for you automatically. I would be lost without this. It is http://www.mediachance.com/digicam/enhancer.htm (the free version) is what I downloaded long ago and absolutely love it.

I like my HP but the photos would horrible without this software. A friend of mine has a really expensive Canon digital and her photos come out dark, too, till she tried this software.

I found something thet I didnt see before , when I view the home page at 1024 x 768 the boxed in paragrapgh with the tan background , under the beer stein runs off the right hand side of my screen , chopping off some words. Im using IE6. I didnt notice before cause my favorites menu was pulled down , bringing my width to 800

Looks much better! It looks fine now.

I' m sorry I was so " nit picky" about the fox about the fox image being " clearer" . It' s just before it was so blurry and now it' s definitely the image of a " feasting fox" ...looks much better IMO.

The site is really looking nice. It looked nice before, but sometimes it' s amazing how a few adjustments here and there can make it even better. Sometimes one can have trouble knowing when to stop adjusting.

I change my husband' s site and mine quite regularly, get tired of something, make lists of things I don' t like and by the end of " I' ll just make a couple of adjustments" the site has generally changed completely.:):):)

Thanks you guys and gals!

I have just been swamped lately and haven' t had a minute to get back here! Wonder what it is this year - almost Christmas and EVERYONE wants a website NOW before January 1 - not complaining but need about 4 of me to go around!!

Thanks for all the input everyone! This is such a great forum!:)

Oh, forgot! Don' t be sorry RSWeb! Please - the input and ideas from everyone is very much appreciated. Sometimes these eyes don' t see what others see after staring at the same thing continuously! Believe me - I like suggestions - good or bad all the time. I don' t take it personally!
