Web Hosting (free) - 12/4/2002 23:16:55
I have asked this forum questions in the past with extreme success. I really appreciate the knowledge base represented by those involved.

Anyway, I' m looking for some FREE web hosting for FP webs. I have a group of students who created some pages and I want to provide them with some hosts that I can recommend.

What free FP hosting sites do you recommend?

I maintain a free site at Geocities. They have some FP2000 extensions and you can publish your site. Don' t FTP once you start publishing as you will loose the extensions. Don' t expect any help from them if you have a problem. I have been using Geocities for a couple of years and so far it' s been pretty good. You will have to put up with ads.

Treetopsranch, I also have one at Geocities, but they say no more support FTP or " publish" from FP. Can you publish yr site from FP?

Existing Geocites accounts that had FP enabled can continue to use FP, but those who setup new accounts no longer have FP functionality.

Does any one have experience with Tripod? From experience, can anyone tell me if Angel Fire or Tripod are better?

Thanks.

I can' t specifically say where the link is to set your preferences for your web, but I do know it is simply a check box to choose FP extensions.

Mosky,

At tripod simply log into your account and select My Account > Website Details then scroll down to " Preferences" and where it says Microsoft Frontpage click enable. When you try to open the site using frontpage the url will be http://frontpage.tripod.com/yoursitename/

Thanks Mike,
It happened to me a long time ago when I started learning web design, and had no experience at all, and without any help from anybody. After a while I signed up with Netfirms.com and got a pretty good host (free host with ad banner). I heard a lot of good things about Tripod, will give it a try. Hey Mike, do you mind to visit my site and give me some comments (when I got it, of course)!?

Mosky,

Does Netfirms have a band width limit for their free service?

What I like most about Netfirms is that I can use the Publish feature of FP, sometime I can use a FTP utility for files transfer. Following are some features:
quote:

FREE WEB HOSTING
FREE 25 MB Webspace
FREE Domain Hosting
FREE CGI-BIN Support
FREE 24/7 FTP Access
FREE Online Support
FREE Catch-All Email
FREE Promotion
INSTANT ACTIVATION!

Of course there are banner ads, if you want " no ad" , it is 4.99 $$ a month.

Thanks a lot. I will have my students setting up accounts for free hosting next week, so I be able to really compare the features over time. I will update the forum as to my own experiences at that time.

Thanks. How have your experiences been with Tripod?

I' ve got 3 or 4 " play" sites there and haven' t had any problems. They' re easy to get started and work with. I think the FP extensions support defaults to 2000 but then I haven' t tried using many of the new FP features on any of those sites. I like being able to choose the type of ads they place on your site, I really hate those annoying popups everytime you click to a page.:)[:' (] I prefer to stick with the top banner, it can be customized to fit better with the site. You get to add one image to it as well so you can draw it into your site a little.

I second Mike...

I have three " play" sites on Tripod... never any problems...

The thing I like about Tripod compared to other free hosts is the domain name...

When you get a site on most free hosts it' s http://freehost.user.member.123usje937430w9er3k423q.yourweb.com
(I' m exagerating, of course)

On Tripod it' s http://yourweb.tripod.com

simple

On Netfirms.Com your site has this name http://yourname.Netfirms.Com. Here is an example: http://mocchau.netfirms.com/

Tripod and Netfirm seem to be the two represented in this forum. Angel Fire wasn' t spoken for.

bnavis, several posts back towards the begining I had comented on Angel Fire.

I did have several problems loading to the site for some reason, then all of a sudden, I was in.

Also, I had worked on the site for several hours one day, and they wouldn' t let me in for a while, told me that I had went over my bandwidth! So, not sure how good it really is, however it is perfect for me right now. Just a family site.:)

Ive been using Tripod and Geocities. Tripod you get a subdomain name.
fp extensions works with tripod. I just use file upload at Geocities .
Tripod can be a little confusing navigating around.
Angelfire and tripod are part of the same group (lycos)
Tripod gives you 20 megs space 1 gig bandwidth

Have always used Tripod as a ' play' host, and also for some very small businesses who do not want to pay out their hard earned cash.
Never had any real problems with them. The early ones where mine, and general ignorance.
Help is pretty weak, but well it is free. I understand that they now have ' live' help for the paid sites. Rather like ' Registerfly' which is excellent, and very efficient. [affordable domains]
Know for the nasty bit - anyone know how to remove the Tripod info from the upload section of the FP publishing, need to change servers, for a client with MONEY, and cannot get rid of the Tripod info. Have place a ? on the server forum, so please excuse me for duplication.
Will try some of the other servers when I can change the ***** name.

Hi all,

Netfirms.com is good and the naming is good yourname.netfirms.com.

It supports PHP ....etc except ASP.

Is there any free web hosting that supports ASP.

If there is not free web hosting that supports ASP, which paid one do you recommend.

Hisham
