Just curious about setting up Pay Pal - 12/6/2002 7:06:22
I am interested in knowing how more experienced folks handle a website for a client that wants to use Pay Pal but has not set up an account with Pay Pal (or any other merchant processor) yet.

Do you, as the web designer, actually create the Pay Pal account for the customer after getting the details of a bank account/credit card and " pretend you are them" and handle all the details?

If you do it this way, how do you deal with all the acceptance terms of Pay Pay (on behalf of a client who has not read/agreed to the terms)?

Do you do a site visit to the client and sit down at their computer so that the verification process happens together? How do you handle it if the distance is too far?

Do you charge extra for this? or is this part of the cost of creating a e-commerce site?

Any help or thoughts welcomed.

I have not set up PayPay for a client (Irish merchants do not use it much as we cannot get the money out!!) but I have set up several third party processors.

I would ALWAYS get the client to set up the account with the processor. I might, if they wanted me too, sit beside them while they did it or talk them through it on the phone but it important that it is they who agree the terms and so on. It would, I imagine, actually be illegal for anyone else to do so.

I then get access to the account at the processor sufficient to set up whatever needs setting up but I always recommend that once that is done the site owner change their password. If I need in again in the future they can let me in for as long as required and then change their password again.

I' ve set it up a few times and always have the client do the set up work. I send them instructions I created that takes them step by step through the process and have them call me if they get stuck. I haven' t had to help them yet. They' re usually terrified to get started but with my instructions they know what is happenng and what happens next. Most important thing I have to stress to them is they have to sign up for a business account, NOT a personal account.

Works pretty well and all are quite happy with it.

One word: chargebacks

While PayPal chargebacks are rare, they can happen. It' s critical that your customer be the one to do the registration so that there' s no question you signed them up for something they didn' t understand.

The last thing you want is a customer of yours screaming down the phone because they' ve had a chargeback and they now hate you :)

Thanks. Good Advice. I have been having the customer do the set-up and read and agree to all the terms of Pay Pal. I thought that' s what I should do.

I' m just feeling the pain and frustration of folks that can' t follow step by step screen shot print outs of how to set up the account by themselves. They appear to be very computer challenged with this step!

Since I am just starting out I wondered if I should be doing things differently. I seem to be spending an awful lot of time helping do it over and over. This is the third time that Customer Service at Pay Pal has deleted their account so they can start all over again. Let' s hope that the fourth time is the lucky number!

(I' ll turn this into a training opportunity to get paid just for this component the next time!)

I use http://mals-e.com and link to to PayPal (he has the option sort-of integrated into the cart) that way people can still accept check or money orders and eventually integrate into a 3rd party processor or one of his supported gateways when they have the income to do so.

Just a thought.

(And I usually walk people through it on the phone - I am in VA and most of my clients are on the west coast.)
