gails site - 12/9/2002 7:21:57
Gail , I saw your site on Digital photography , i like the site , anyway I was never really impressed with the photos I use to see from digital cameras. untill I bought my Minlota dimage s404 . its 4 megapixel. the pictures have totaly impressed me, it even performes very well in low light . but it doesnt have a whole lot of zoom . I recently saw a high end sony (I think 5+ megapxel) with a nice zoom lens. about 700 $ . do you know anything about this line of cameras. or can you point me to some digital cameras with good zoom lens or changebale lenses.???

Pacific77 It' s difficult to recommend a camera by manufacture when you haven' t used that brand, so let me direct you to where you can get some great help. But first, the most important thing to realize about digital camera zoom lenses is to get an Optical one, not digital. Saying this, most mid to high priced digicams come with both optical and digital zoom lens. But the optical is THE one to get if a camera only has one type. I rely on the wealth of information offered at megapixel.net and wouldn' t think of purchasing a camera without first reading their comprehensive reviews. When you go to a camera review, don' t overlook the drop-down menu at the top of the page called ' Review Sections.' It covers camera ergonomics, characteristics, image quality, interface and software, specifications, etc. http://www.megapixel.net/html/issueindex.html Narrow your choices down to 3-4 cameras then hop over to the forums at dpreview. I can' t say enough good things about this camera forum! http://www.dpreview.com/forums/ At dpreview, you can discuss with others, including photo pros, all aspects and features of digicam by manufacture. Plus there is a lot of other good digital photography related discussion boards. A five megapixel camera is fine but may be an overkill if you don' t plan to print out large photos. If you do not, I' d spend the money on camera features, not megapixels. As you may already know, I discuss the relation of megapixels and print size here: http://www.gtbdesign.com/camera/before.htm Additionally, if you do not need to print out large photos, get less megapixels and invest in a high-quality, high output photo printer. I have one and the results are just stunning when images are printed out on premium photo paper. One more thought. Before purchasing, I always recommend you go to a camera shop and hold a camera in your hand so you get a " feel" for it. Originally, I intended to buy a particular camera but ended up not doing so because the " feel" of it was so uncomfortable. Digital cameras are expensive so it is well worth your time to do some homework prior to making an investment. Hope this helps a bit. gail

I' ve commented before on Gail' s excellent website...it is superb! Some other resources for digital camera shoppers/newbies: Steve' s Digicams ShortCourses in Digital Photography It is so true about the importance of optical zoom. My trusty Olympus C-2100uz is " only" 2 megapixels, but has a 10x " optically stabilized" zoom (35mm equivalent of 37-370mm). There is no substitute for a good optical zoom.

ORIGINAL: WaterMan It is so true about the importance of optical zoom. My trusty Olympus C-2100uz is " only" 2 megapixels, Thanks, WaterMan! Most of the photos at the site were taken with a FujiFilm FinePix 1.3 megapixel camera, which has the most basic of features. It has been given to my daughter and I now use a 2.1 mp FinePix, more than adequate for the size print outs I do. I still use my trusty 35 mm film camera for a lot of stuff; most importantly it has a 28 mm wide-angle lens which I can not live without. My next digicam will be when it comes with a quailty, wide-angle lens...which is affordable. gail

Rush is my all time favorite band , even though I dont dont listen to music as much as I use to. I doubt anyone can argue against them being the best 3 MAN band ever. 30 years of succesful albums . more than 20 albums I dont know exact count. starting from raw sounding rock n roll of early 70s to more well composed music of late 80s and 90s. personally I like the 70s and 80s stuff the best. its hard to believe 3 men could put out this good of music

Bobby, I can confuse anyone...when you said the Rush quote, I didn' t even think of the band or the fact the quote was from pacific77. You were talking to me when you said that and I thought you were referencing my last line, " Hey, watch it everyone!" And, I immediately thought you were referring to Rush Limbaugh or however you spell his last name. See, what can happen when I jump to conclusions? This really made me feel silly. But, I got quite a laugh out of it.
