Color blind test - 12/11/2002 12:40:25
I know there is a site where you can plug in a URL and see what a color blind person would see. Does anyone know the URL of such a site?

Thanks!

no, but I wanted to make this comment:

color blind is not the same for everyone. It doesn' t necessarily mean that they see in black and white...

When a person is color blind they perceive colors differently than we do... IOW they may not see the color blue, or it may appear grey. Shades of Red might look like grey' s or browns, etc.

So I don' t think that a website will be able to accurately show you what a color blind person will see... since there are many different ways to be color blind.

Just like there isn' t a website that can show you exactly what a person will see who has their monitor set to 256 colors... the shade, hue, and saturation levels will still vary depending on a number of factors...

Hope that' s helpful.

Thanks Bobby. I hear that most common problem colors are green and blue.

typically it' s a primary color, but that effects any color that may contain that primary... blue and green is a good example.

I' ve known three color blind people in my lifetime (probably more, but it was none of my business :))

One saw BW, one saw red as shades of grey, the other saw blue as shades of grey...

Years ago I read an article that estimated 12% of the population (US) suffered from one form or another of color blindness, and didn' t even realize it...

The most common is red/green, followed by yellow/blue. Monochromatic is the rarest. I' m a red/green colorblind peson, and my tech when I was in medical research was monochromatic. We tried to avoid color-based assays, and no one was surprised at how we dressed.

Men suffer from colorblindness more than women because the primary genes that affect color perception are located on the X chromosome (of which men only have one). As I mentioned above, there may be some ancillary genes as well, which leads to gradations in suffering.

It' s true that different people suffer to different extents, as there appear to be several genes that play a role in color perception. In my case, I can tell red from green quite well when they are separate from one another. I can even tell with large blocks of color placed next to each other. Too close, and the transition is indistinct. Small dots in patterns (such as a colorblindness test, or a Seraut painting), fuhgeddaboudit.

My wife designed some very nice buttons for our website one year--green text on red background. I couldn' t read them, so we didn' t use them. I couldn' t even see the text. There was an M & M' s ad campaign asking " What is it about the green ones" , and M&Ms spilling out of the bag. The green ones apparently spelled out " desire" . I couldn' t see that either. Driving at night on a busy street with lots of neon and stoplights is a nightmare--I can barely tell what' s what.

I can barely tell there are two colors in the " Post Reply" button in this thread. I have to cover one of the words to see the color of the other. They look like the same color when uncovered.

In general, it' s not hard to design for a colorblind person. Just do everything in black and white. :) The best thing to do is to avoid putting these color combinations close together and in small sizes (such as the text on a button). It' s the perception of the fine details that is a problem.

No problemo. Just so you know, the text in the " PostReply" button looks brownish, with a subtle difference in shading. I have to really focus on one word to detect the difference, though. I guess the little pages are yellow-ish.

Besides genetic factors, another reason people have different degrees of colorblindness is how their brain interprets the color signals. Somebody else might see grey text in that button.
