When someone gets your domain? - 12/14/2002 18:18:24
My hosting including my domain name and they were supposed to automatically renew it... They only send links via email to have you fill out a form on their site to keep it active, which I did not receive. So now, some bozo male has my domain, which is plastered on EVERYTHING I have (auto responders, forms, etc.) and it isn' t being used for anything even remotely close to being related to the name. Is there anything I can do about it? BTW - the domain is http://www.breastfeedingdiet.com/ . Thanks.

There is not a thing in the world you can do about it. Horrible thing to happen, my sympathies, though I know that is little use to you. I reckon he is waiting for you to contact him to buy it back, and will probably quote a ludicrous price for it.

Bummer... especially with a PR of 4... it is just sitting there wasting away. I am sorry. You may want to purchase BREASTFEEDINGDIETS.COM. It was available a few minutes ago (it is now 11:12pm CST). The plural should not hurt and if you build it up a bit the person who owns your old domain will have less leverage.

I have to agree with the others. I am sorry that you got ' screwed' , yet this brings something up for others. 1. Never rely on someone else to do your job. 2. Manage your own affairs whenever possible. 3. Just because you have it is more than enough means for someone else to want. 4. Some people do things for their own reason - most of them are never the right reason. I know this is not as comforting as it should be, but it' s a lesson we can all learn from.

I have a " friend" who registered a domain name for our church and used an e-mail address that he eventually discontinued using. Needless to say the e-mail sent to him about renew the domain never did get to him. He found out once the domain e-mail stopped working. Bummer. I have used www.GoDaddy.com and absolutely recommend them.

I use godaddy for everything now (at least 10 domains, any way) and agree they are the best.

I have used www.directnic.com for a couple of years and about 10 domains. I like the service and ease of use. I would also add that having your own domain and hosting should mean having your own email or me@mydomain.com or whatever. That way even if you change ISP' s or whatever as long as you own the domain registration and have hosting then you are gonna get email.

What a bummer indeed. Had this happen to me once as well and did some research. Basically not much you can do unless you have a fair amount of extra time, patience and money. One of the hotter things in the legal world is the concept of domain squatting or theft. Mine like yours is pretty borderline, and probably not worth the effort or money, but you might want to look at the possibility. Good luck
