Contact Us Form - 12/18/2002 12:56:52
I would like to put a " Contact Us" form in my website. One so customers can type in their information/questions and send to us. How do I do this?

Thanks,

Insert > Form

:)

You can set up each form field, name it for reference, and then specify an email address that the form go to under Form Properties...

Do you have FPSE on your server? (FrontPage Server Extensions)

I am a firm believer in learning from Example and Trial by Error...so why not give this a try...

File, New Page, Feedback form...

Now play with that and see what you come up with...it may be easier than you think.... :)

Jay,

I just saved the feedback form on my site just to try it out and see if it would work. It did not work. It' s located at www.tsgcom.com/test/test.htm if you want to give it a try.

I am totally clueless as to how to link things on my webpage onto things in a database. Would you mind giving me a step by step and explaining it to me?

Thank you,
Genny

Sorry - Right Click and Select Form Properties!!! Fill that information out...and note what you can do with the features there...

If you open the form on your Hard Drive when you enter an e-mail address and then close the Properties box you will get a warning about the e-mail address...just ignore it...if you open live on the server you will not get this message....

Jay,

I did what you said. I put my email in there but I did not know of anything else that I needed to change. Am I missing something here? When I tried to test the page I got sent to this page http://www.tsgcom.com/test/_derived/nortbots.htm . Why is this so?

Thanks,
Genny

That means that your FPSE are not working properly...you may need to Recalculate ---

I know you' re probably developing an annoyance for me but I have no clue what you mean by " recalculate" . I am going to look on the microsoft site and get the new FPSEs and download and install those. Besides that I have no clue what to do.

Thanks,
Genny

Here is a nice, simple tutorial to try. Step by step.

I' m one of those people who need directions; sometimes I can figure things out just fine...but other times my frustration gets me to the point of tears.

http://frontpageforms.com/custom_form.htm

My husband is one who likes to " figure it out himself" and I think that' s great...but not when you get so frustrated you want to quit.

Jay,

I got the email from your website. I don' t want to just copy the code that you wrote for it... I do think I am getting a better grip on how to make that page though. Can you help me?

Peppergal,

I followed the directions on the page (very helpful I might add). I believe it worked for a second because it brought me to an HTTP error not FPSE error. But now I am getting FPSE errors again. I don' t know what I am doing wrong. I changed up a few words (but the problems existed before the change). I don' t know what the FPSE errors are. Can you steer me in the right direction?

The page is located at www.tsgcom.com/contactus.htm

Happy Holidays:)

There isn' t really any code for you to copy...when you create a form you need to set up the FORM PROPERTIES....you do this by right clicking on the form and selecting Form Properties from the menu. Then you select options! These fields are what are you need to fill in, in order to have your form function properly or rather function how you want it to.

Does that help?

Jay,

I did fill out the Form Properties, I have put my email address and " _private/form_results.txt" for the file name. Is there anything further that I need to fill out in the Form Properties? Also, I recalculated hyperlinks for the page and nothing changed.

How do I restart or stop/start the FPSEs from my IIS server? I saved the form on my computer at www.tsgcom.com/form.htm. It looks like the FPSEs are still wrong.

I don' t know if its anything wrong on my page or on my server.

Thank you,
Genny

This makes me wonder??? Are you hosting this site on your machine or are you using a Web Host? If you are using a Web Host - inform them that the extensions are not running. If you are hosting this yourself - sorry I am not familiar enough with IIS and the setup of IIS to assist you.

That being said, wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

Yes I am hosting my own site. If the problem is with my server then how do I fix this? I read somewhere that you can go into Control Panel and " reset/do something" to the FPSEs. But, I don' t know what to do or how to do it. Anyone know how?

Thanks a bunch and happy holidays to all of you!

Just for FYI I recalculated the links on the form page yesterday and I redownloaded and reinstalled the FPSEs on my IIS a few days ago.

Thanks ;D

In my past experiences it is better to add/install FPSE when there are no files (website) on the " server" and then publish once the FPSE have been installed.

Thanks for the link Gil. Jay, I don' t think that' s possible, I' ve already built everything on the server. I also have other sites running on the server. I wish I could do that though! I had no clue about FPSE' s when I first began this!

Gil,

Where do I look on this link to find how to use the FPSEs? Would this be the same for a 4.0 IIS even though this is a link for 5?

I just removed the FPSEs and then redownloaded and reinstalled them again. I get this message after I finish installing them that I need to install them on my web server. I don' t get it. Didn' t I just do that? I have been putting the FPSEs in my wwwroot folder and wonder if they should be in D(where wwwroot is), C or somewhere else. Can anyone help me here?

Thanks,
Genny:)

RE: Contact Us Form - 12/24/2002 17:00:01
I just did a test submit and got the following
------------------------------
FrontPage Run-Time Component Page
You have submitted a form or followed a link to a page that requires a web server and the FrontPage Server Extensions to function properly.

This form or other FrontPage component will work correctly if you publish this web to a web server that has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.

Click the <Back> arrow to return to the previous page.
------------------------------
I am guessing this is the same as you have been getting. If so, this definitely indicates the extensions aren' t working on your site.

In addition, are you actually Publishing with FP to a location on your server?
If not, this may be part of the problem as well.
Although you may have created the web on the server, it still needs to be published with FP.

Also, did you create a text file (feedback.txt) and add this to your _Private folder?
Depending on what version of FP you are using, the default file is (_Private/form_results.txt) this text file is already included in your private folder. If you use an alternative, you need to add this text file to the folder.

What do you mean WWWROOT is on the D drive? - I' m not a MS server admin, but it has been my experience MS doesn' t play well when you change the defaults. WWWROOT should be under Inetpub on your C drive. You can point to files located on the D drive for your webs but I would suggest not moving WWWROOT out of the Intenpub directory and not moving Inetpub from it' s default location.
