Ever wondered how your competitors are doing in the statistics area.

Try having a look at their webstats button.

I found that 6 of my competitors in the field of didgeridoos didnt have their freebie webstats password protected.

It was interesting to see and compare the search results compared to where we all stood on the search engine results.

What amazed me was a site on the second page of Google was doing relatively the same as a site on the first page (there was a difference, but not monumental)(There was another page where the stats just did not make sense with what I was seeing)

So take it all with a grain of salt, and maybe being on the second or third page compared to the 1st or 2nd listing, isnt sooooo bad after all if you are in a niche market where people are prepared to shop around.

Cheers from the Outback

But... it isn' t about the words and phrases per se.... it is how many SE' s the site is listed on, how many people link to it, and the rankings of the linkers. I personally get my clients started by linking my site to theirs so they are up higher, faster, and after a few months they have their own link exchanges, etc. going and I remove it.

Yes yes and yes Summer to the above, I do the same.....

But it is also or moreso about words and phrases nowadays (especially in Google which is a dominant engine).
Keyword density (ie a nice spread of your main keywords that potential clients use to search with).

We can pump our meta tags full of words that may not even get read by the engines. They are weighing in a bit more on what we actually write on our pages (relevancy on the page to the search)

I also run my didgeridoo site & worked hard to get it from 200+ to 40ish using keyword density......and maybe I have overdone it.(due for a 2003 overhaul)
For multiple keywords I do OK on the first page in searches.
But even though I am listed in numerous search engines, Google is the one that brings me in the majority of my sales... the others hardly count.(ohhhaaaa did I say that)

All of what you said is correct, with the search engines using all sorts of data/algos to rank you.......but content is king (as they say)

Have a poke around in www.webmasterworld.com .......our clients rely on us not just for a great site, but a site that will be found easily.

Yeah every time I come accross a stats display that I can get into I just chuckle. If in my field I will look to see what they are targeting. Then I head over to Oveture and see what the keywords geneeated in terms of searches. If high enough I throw up a page on optimized content.
