Michael -> Custom Batch Conversions in PhotoShop (12/30/2002 14:11:12)

The following was my response to a question in the Graphics forum and I think it' s helpful enough, and a huge timesaver, that I decided to repost it here so more will benefit.

If you need to convert a large number of image files PhotoShop makes it very easy, if you know where to look. And by convert, I mean convert! You can resize, sharpen, colorize, save in a new format, practically anything you can think of. I have a recurring project at my real job that requires me to convert almost 400 PDFs to BMPs, and this process takes about 15 minutes now. Follow the instructions to the letter and you' ll be batch converting in no time!

1. In Photoshop, go to the History/Actions pallette and click on the Actions tab.
2. Without selecting any default actions, create a New Set by clicking on the little folder icon. Name your set.
3. Create a New Action by clicking on the icon next to the trash can. Name the action and hit " Record" You' ll see the red " record" button on the Actions pallette is now depressed, and the black " stop" button is also available.
4. Now the fun part! Open a file that you want to convert.
5. Resize it, change the format to RBG, Greyscale, whatever you wish
6. Save it with the changes made
7. Close the file
8. Without doing anything else, click on the black " stop" button.

Voila! Your new Action Script is now ready to run, so let' s run it!

Go to File>Automate>Batch. Select your Set and Action from the drop downs. Now select the folder with all the original images and also a folder to hold the converted images. Have a look at the attached image for other settings that help speed up the process. When you' re ready to run the script just hit " OK" and let Photoshop do it' s thing.

I' ve used Action Scripts to add borders to a few hundred images at a time, convert from 600dpi to 300dpi, resize, etc. It' s a great tool, and one everybody who needs to convert a large number of images should get to know.
