Revamping a site - 12/31/2002 12:23:57
I' m working at revamping a site for a local band. The site they have is currently updated by one of the band members. I' ve only talked to them briefly, him about 10 min. I got the feeling of " You' re stepping on my toes" . The sound man is thinking of taking over the site updates and I' m going to be doing a site for him and that is how I got involved in this one. I' m trying to make it so if he decides to do updates himself that it will be fairly easy for him to make adjustments.

Since I haven' t had much of a chance to talk to them and feeling the other band member doing updates now may not be too pleased with me helping out, I' m trying to make " gradual" adjustment suggestions. I' m trying to use the same basic layout they have now, tweeking a bit for readability, etc. and hoping if they like them make further suggestions in the future regarding more dynamic changes....want to ease into it if you know what I mean.

I' m hoping to get a new photo for the home page, clean copy without the text as it' s difficult to read, I' m using the old one for now because I' m using what I had available from the old site. I' d like to make it a bit smaller for faster loading, etc.

Suggestions/comments regarding changes to date, etc.

Hi, rsweb.

Well, I think the purpose of revamping a site is to make it ' different' . Unfortunately, at least to me, it looks like you just changed the background, the font, and erased the border around the logo. In other words, it pretty much looks just like the old site. But I understand your situation.

Try this:
Create a complete mockup and present it to them as if to say, " Hey, this would really make your band stand out on the web. And it will be easy for you guys to maintain as well. It presents you as the professional band that you are. It also shows your love for the music, yada yada yada." Of course, this involves a little work on your part.

Your role as a designer, and a business professional, encourage you to see where you can make them stand out amongst the rest of the world. When you make someone feel that you' re doing the best thing for them and their project they' ll pretty much give you control...as long as they can see the benefits.

Because right now, as it stands, they will probably say what I said at the beginning. I' m sure you have more ideas to follow.

I agree with Seventh, take the initiative to give them a whole new look... surprise and impress them...

If it' s easier, create the mock-up as a .gif image.

That way you can quickly give them an idea of what the look of the site could be... without worrying about actually building the site...

Also, if they like the idea (or I should say, when they decide that they like the idea) you' ve already got graphics built that you can crop out and drop into a web page...

You might look into some ASP or PHP powered content management scripts. There are loads of them at http://www.hotscripts.com

Take the approach that you' re only trying to make it easier for the updating, not take over for them. Show them an example of how easy it could be to update the pages.. that might appease both bandmates.

:edit:
Another suggestion... get them off of Tripod. A host can cost less than $50 per year and will make them look more professional and " with the times"

Tripod is great for personal use, but not for a marketing tool like this...

Suggest that they move from NamesDirect to http://www.godaddy.com for their domain... that will save them a little more than $20 per year... which coule pay for part of the hosting!

(or beer... which is a large part of a bands yearly budget... :))

I' m with bobby and Seventh, out with the old and in with something totally new. It' s only four pages for ******* sake. The bar pics don' t mean anything to any fan they may have either, so maybe it' s only three pages. Give ' em something original to look at, you might be surprised at the response.

And people say I' m wordy.:)

Rho,
Do they have releases from those people in the bar? Some look really drunk....don' t know if I would want my drunken pic on the web :)

That might be a good way to get rid of those pics - just ask the band if they have releases from everyone to use there pics - I bet not. Clears the way for new design.

You might want to play with the band photos and take them into black and white or colorize them in some way to give them more of a artistic feel.

I agree with everyone else, I would just re-design a couple of new designs and see what the band thinks. The current site is so aweful that they will see the light - if they don' t have them look at some Big name bands. Only problem there is most band sites are done in flash.

GOOD LUCK on this one!
