Web Site Infringement - 1/6/2003 8:16:00
Hello All............... I could certainly use some advise!!! I just discovered that my web site has been " stolen" outright. In doing some market analysis I came across a mirror image of one of my web pages, then found my whole web site has been pirated and is doing business as someone else. I have a notice posted on my home page that all is copyrighted and cannot be used in any form etc etc. It only took me over 2 years to develop my site........so you can understand why I can' t even think straight right now!!! Could anyone give me some advise as to what i can do about it? Any suggestions are really appreciated! I don' t know if it makes any difference but this is what is posted on my home page: This Web Site is protected by copyright laws, and may not be copied/reproduced in any form without written permission Thanks......... Joe, Have you emailed them letting them know that you know this? I know someone who had similar problem & they emailed company & they took their site down. If you threaten them they might do this. Do you have backup showing you have had this design for awhile? Could be a battle. Things like this stink. Erin

The way I have most often noticed is by keeping an eye on the log files for the site. Generally when people steal sites they forget to change a few image links or page links and end up calling them from your server. If you see traffic coming to your site from somewhere you never heard of, that is one way of finding out. Have caught a couple of people that way. Other times I have entered a string of text into a browser that is from a site of mine, or a client of mine, mainly with the purpose if checking positioning or seeing if a page is in the SE index. Then, remarkably!, I find that another site has precisely the same wording. On visiting it could be they just stole the text (as has happened with several articles I have written, sometimes represented as their own, sometimes uncredited) but quite often the entire design will have been stolen along with the text. Sometime people are plain stupid. For example in one site they changed everything but forgot to change page titles. As page titles on most of my sites will be essentially common search terms, their site appears in the same list as many common searches for the original site. The client noticed that one, which was pointed out by one of the site users. The bit that annoys most is that about half the time that I have had stuff taken (and I am less riled up about it now, it has happened to a greater or lesser extent so often) it has been taken by " web designers" and sold on to clients. I do feel a bit sorry for the clients in that situation, they were not to know and it causes hassle for them.

Hi............. The way I found out was............... I was doing some research on search words and this site popped up, with a description that was really identical to my own.........I was quite surprised and probably wouldn' t have even noticed the URL were it not for the language................ If people would spend half the effort (on their own work) they do on cheating others trying to get something for nothing.......UGH!!
