Micah,

Keep in mind that if people are using dial-up, data will only stream so fast. And when you do log-on in dial-up, you don' t always get the best speed. The speed you get depends on which modem at your ISP detects and grabs your call. All ISP' s have different banks of modem types. There not all 56K. When you call your ISP to log-on, the 56K banks are checked first, if they are all in use, the 38K banks are checked next, and so on down the line. Many times when I had dial-up I got various types of connections: 49000, 45333, 38800, etc, etc... The lowest I ever got was 14.4. That' s slow. Talk about a sleeping pill.

You need some type of software that can speed things up in page loading. I don' t even know if they make anything like that. Maybe try a google search.

My main website is slow like yours. And I know why. My header graphic is large. But I just live with it.

There IS one more thing you might want to try. Break the map into 4 separate photo segments and align them exactly on your page. This way there is never a long wait for something to pop up. Many sites do this now to break the waiting time and user' s can see gradual progress.

Also you can have FP make your graphic fade in as it loads. This way you don' t have to deal with the typical scenerio: " One minute you don' t see it, the next minute you do" .

It comes in gradually AND people see progress on your page.

Hi Micah,

From Home
I am using a 56K modem, but my connection speed i 49.2.

It took me 20 seconds from clicking the link on the forum to viewing your whole page.

It does not seem slow.

But last week I tried it and my connection was 14.3, it took me half a minute.

From An Internet Cafe
They are using DSL, it took me 9 second to load the whole page

From Work
We are using a 100MB network speed. Your page loads as if it was already open under my screen saver.

LLL is very much correct in what he said about the ISP banks.

So, with the normal 56K speed I don' t think your page is slow.

Best regards
Hisham

It come in a lot quicker today!

Maybe just cached?

I' m connecting on a 2MB connection. I still think that a page before hand, explaining that it is preloading all images, and that the page may take a few seconds to load so that the ser doesn' t think that nothing is happening and leaves the site.

I love the site anyway!!

Dave

Hi,

I agree with you Dave, the site is nice. But I got an error " debug" , did you?

It is faster today yes, I tried it from my other computer at home and it was OK, it was not cached on that one.

I got the error yesterday, but not today.

Also the problem with the popup is that a lot of people now have popup killers.

Popup killer = No loading popup!

Hi,

Right Dave.

On a second thought, Micah does not need that popup. If he can divide the map as LLL suggested will make it faster.

I heared also that there are other picutre formats that make the picture very small wih maintaining the clearnce.

Still seems to be intermittently slow, which is why I would definatley recommend the preloading page.

Do we get free breaks in Britain for this Micah?

Hisham,

You got an error debug???

Micah,
Today it loaded right in. Only about 6 seconds on DSL. About the pop-up window. CENTER the word " Loading with the colored squares" . Other than that, all is nice. If you still need speed reduction, break the photo into 4 parts.

Hisham,

You got an error debug?

Micah
Your page loaded in pretty fast on DSL today. 5 seconds. If you still need more speed, cut the photo into pieces. Also, in your little pop-up - center the word and 4 little colored boxes. Other than that, your cool page is ready to go?

Hi,

Not good for long. Today it took 24 seconds on a T1 connection.

Eventually, Mark is right, the connection speed vary due to the modem and connection banks on the ISP' s side.

Micah,

Leave it as it is, as I said before the speed is not fixed sometimes slow sometimes fast, there are sites which are bigger than yours with lot of pictures too.

Just try to divide the map, that' s all.

Hisham is right - don' t get in over your head. I like your site the way it is. If needed, break the photos into smaller chunks.
