This is probably very basic for this forum, but it seems to most suitable. I have recently completed two sites for two very different but very small companies that are very strapped for cash. Can anyone tell me the most cost effective way of registering these sites with the various search engines.

Hi,

Sure.

Make sure both sites have some good content first before you even start thinking search engines. Also make sure the page titles are on topic for that page. Utilize your keyword in that title also while making it readable.

Next, do a search on the keywords you are targeting and find sites that are on " theme" with your sites. Then approach these sites about trading links. Build up your link popularity heavily. Make this an ongoing task also as you never can have too many links pointing into your site. however keep in mind all links from other sites should be from sites that are on " theme" with yours.

Next, head over to dmoz ( http://www.dmoz.org ) and find the one perfect category that covers your sites " theme" . Submit to that one category only. Now under regional categories submit the site to the appropriate region. Do not over submit to dmoz though, keep it to the two submissions only. Make note of the categories that you submit to, do they have an editor. If they do then great. If not track your submissions time line. If over two months email the editor to the category above it politely and state what is going on.

Next...Google. You can submit your page here...

but I think the dmoz submission will help more on getting into Google. Also the link trading that you do will help the Google spider/bot " find" your site quicker than the above two actions.

The only problem with DMOZ is the categories that fit most folks here are filled with so many site entries that DMOZ has stopped submissions (removed the " add URL" entry).

This leaves only the alternative of slightly miscategorizing your site to something that doesn' t have so many submissions...and that' s counter-productive because you then get people coming to you for the wrong reasons.

As painful as it is I think the best way is still to get a good software product for tracking submissions (I use WebPostion Gold) and go through the long learning curve for this complex software and then spend the tens of hours monthly it takes to keep your sites and clients listed. Major amount of work.

Or just outsource this service and mark it up a reasonable percentage and make money while you sleep <g>. Most " good" web marketing services will gladly do an affiliate deal with you for this and mark down their price so if you work with only them.

In fact, I' m actually looking for a good affiliate partnership for this now...if anyone knows some of the best. I see a lot out there but not sure which one to sign up with.

It took me over 3 months to get listed in DMOZ with just submitting once.
My Yahoo freebie must of been purged, so I submitted again after 3 months (have heard they purge the freebies each month, so it is guess work whether you submit at the end of the monthly cycle only to have the list wiped the next week)

Links from your portfolio pages to their new sites can do wonders.
