Reminding clients of domain expiration - 1/9/2003 14:34:39
Most of my clients are small business owners who neither need nor have maintenance agreements.

Question: do you as web designer keep track and those notify clients, who are not on maintenance contracts, when their domain is about to expire? Or do leave that responsibility to them? I use several hosting services and find that a few of their email renewal notices are not timely, so someone has to keep watch.

I keep track of it and notify them no matter if they are on a contract or not. The good will generated pays for the effort many times over.

Have to agree with garyb. I send them notices about a month from their expiration date and another two weeks in. After that it' s up to them.

Just remember, going that extra mile puts you one more mile ahead of your competition.

Have to agree with that too. Although being able to advise clients of domain expiration in Australia is now very difficult, as the new world order here sees that information removed from the public whois database (a real pain).

Fortunately, we manage a good block of our clients domain names, and will hopefully transfer all of them over in the coming 12 months as their domains expire with Melbourne IT. We have access to expiry dates of those domains we manage through the Registrar we resell for. Ah the fun of domain names... :)

Now, back to our regular programming... I agree with Seventh about the importance of going that extra mile for clients, and helps them remember your organisation, even if they hvae done nothing with you for 12 months because their site is static - or whatever - being so pro-active to help them manage their web presence has led a few of our clients to make major updates to their web sites... which of course in the long run is good for our bottom line...

I have to agree with everyone here. Anytime I am notified of a domain renewal I send them an email asking them if they want me to renew it for them.

Many times they will email me back saying yes & ask me to do something else on the site. :)
