Teeth whitening special- great, or cheesy? - 1/11/2003 20:48:29
Hello. I just added a ' Teeth Whitening Special' to my dental website. Its only a week old, and although its too early to tell if its successful or not, its hard for me as a dentist to assess whether its truly a good thing to have in terms of positive professional marketing, or a turn-off. Although I get a decent amount of traffic on my site from my other pages, in the opinion of you fellow ' forum-ers' , do you think I should keep it, modify it, or just ' yank it' ? All opinions greatly appreciated! Thanks, Ed www.encinosmiledr.com

I don' t mind the idea of a teeth whitening special at a dentist' s site. But if you want my opinion, I think the animation you have there, with what looks like false teeth going from yellow to white, looks tacky, really tacky! That jumping text is annoying too. The animation does not even look professional. I' d consider using something else to advertise the service. gail

Looked at your site with IE 6.0 and resolution at 800 X 600. The site loaded fast with my 28.8 connection. I did get a horizontal scroll bar. Tried to look at your graphics, but right-click was disabled. (You may want to check the " Search" option here as to the ability of that to protect your coding.

OK Gail: I appreciate your candor. Do you know how I can make the animation better-looking? Should I just scan in a before and after whitening picture, use swish (I think thats what someone used for it), and get rid of the ' flying' text? What would you substitute in its place? Thanks, Ed

ORIGINAL: 2thdoc What would you substitute in its place? Hi Ed, Please know that my candor is only my opinion, and others may disagree. Know also the " prejudice" behind my reaction: I' m not a fan of animations particularly when they move rapidly, pulse, flash, whatever. I honestly feel they are very distracting and annoying for site visitors. Well, I' m not a fan of dentists either, if the truth be known. Nothing personal, of course. [:p] I suppose it' s the teeth and gums, devoid of lips that bother me. Looks like a set of false teeth. My personal preference would be a static, before and after pix. Nothing new or earth-shattering but tells the story. Gee, your daughter is gorgeous! Why not use her beautiful smile? I' m sure her teeth are whiter than white, but you can add a yellow cast with an image editing program such as Photoshop. I took a screen shot of your daughter (disabling right-click doesn' t really prevent anyone from capturing an image). It' s very tiny but hopefully it illustrates my suggestion. If you go this route, I' d of course suggest a larger image. Showing teeth with a beautiful smile is much more inviting than something that looks like dentures, imho. If you decide to keep some sort of animation, I' d definitely make it slower, with less moving text and get a better image. btw, I was slow to get your ' yank it' comment. LOL! Good gracious, I never thought I' d be in a forum chatting with a dentist about teeth. [:p] gail
