JemperLynn -> Best free html editor (1/14/2003 12:34:55)

I voluntered to teach a basic web design and development class and I need a free html editor. At first I thought I was teaching FrontPage. However, they told me that I have to have a free HTML editor to teach.

Any suggestions....

Jemper

You can get NoteTab Lite for free from HERE

It' s not bad for a freebee... [:)]

If you' re teaching an entry level html class, why not start with Notepad?

JemperLynn -> RE: Best free html editor (1/14/2003 13:39:16)

Thanks I' ll check it out.

I can' t start in Notepad. HTML is way over these people' s minds. It is only a two day, two hours a day, class.

They just want me to show these people the basics.

I wish I had time to start with html because I would. HTML is great to learn.

Jemper

Netscape 7 has Composer built in - which might work also.

rdouglass -> RE: Best free html editor (1/16/2003 9:25:15)

For a free HTML text editor (not WISYWIG), I like Arachnaphilia....

Kitka -> RE: Best free html editor (1/16/2003 20:53:15)

I used Arachnophilia exclusively till a few years ago when I moved to FrontPage 2000. It is an excellent program and I still use version 4 for some tasks.

I have tried version 5, which is now written in Java and compatible with Linux etc, not just Windows. However, there seems to be some basic incompatibility with my system and despite getting all the updated java files etc, it crashes constantly. So I' m sticking with version 4!

Incidentally - Arachnophilia is " CareWare" a concept I appreciate highly. Here is an extract from the page explaining it:

quote:

To own Arachnophilia, I ask that you stop whining about how hard your life is, at least for a while. When Americans whine, nearly everybody else in the world laughs. We have so much, and yet we manage to:

Overlook great examples of beauty around us,
Miss our most important opportunities,
Manage to make ourselves miserable by expecting something even better to come along.

More here: http://www.arachnoid.com/careware/index.html

He singles out Americans, but his words apply equally to heaps of fortunate people living very comfortably in " first-world" cultures. We seem to like finding things to complain about and often fail to sufficiently acknowledge how lucky we are and notice the beauty around us.

Long Island Lune -> RE: Best free html editor (1/17/2003 12:27:04)

Me too.

hhammash -> RE: Best free html editor (1/17/2003 16:58:29)

Hi,

I did not try it yet. I am downloading it now.

But, does it perform some database work like FP?

Thanks

NB.: I had to go to the Mirro Site under Download.com' s Logo.

hhammash -> RE: Best free html editor (1/17/2003 17:26:20)

Yikes! [:o] My post was intended purely for information not " correction" ! Very sorry you took it that way.[:(]

SerenityNet -> RE: Best free html editor (1/17/2003 23:32:28)

One step up from Notepad is the old freeware HomeSite v1.2. It' s like Notepad where you can push a button instead of typing tags and it colors the html code. You can still find it around here and there. If not and you want it then send me a PM and I' ll e-mail it to you. It says it' s for Win95, but I' ve run it on 98SE and Win2K-Pro without any problems. It' s a whopping 815KB in size and will run without installation.

hhammash -> RE: Best free html editor (1/18/2003 7:38:05)

Hi,
1st Page is not WYSIWYG

Best regards
Hisham

Long Island Lune -> RE: Best free html editor (1/19/2003 1:14:40)

Its not???

hhammash -> RE: Best free html editor (1/19/2003 9:45:33)

Hi,

Mark, I think it is not.

Jemperlynn,
Since you will be teaching basic, teach your students on something available like notepad, let them feel the joy of coding by hand, then introduce them to better tools ending with FP.

Writing code in a simple editor like NotePad then converting them into nice webpages has its own feeling. Teach them the hard way at the beginning.

Just a suggestion.

Hisham

Long Island Lune -> RE: Best free html editor (1/19/2003 16:23:56)

Hisham has a point.

When I went to college I had to learn everything in horse-n-buggie land first, then the newer tools. Knowing the foundation of anything is the correct way to learn. Once you have that, then you can advance to the newer tools of today with the solid historic foundation that you need.

Notepad IS the way to go for beginners.
