Slicing: Need help from Photoshop users - 1/15/2003 10:55:16
I' m trying some really serious slicing for the first time using Photoshop 7.0. While I' m finally getting a feel for the concept, my efforts at doing the actual slicing is not really going well.

I sliced an image into five segments making some as jpgs and some as gifs. But when I " Save for the Web" I get 12 images, not five: 11 images plus one spacer. :)

HELP!

thanks, gail

Hey Gail

Are you in ImageReady?

I' ve never used PS > 6... but with v.6 and ImageReady it was all so easy...

Is PS exporting solid colors as images? I sliced one into what I thought was about 8 images but got more than 15 when I checked the exported files...

It took some getting used to, but I figured out that most of those images were just color blocks that I wouldn' t use... layers or tables w/background colors load faster :)

I had to get used to the way IR sliced out my pieces...

Maybe you' re seeing the same thing?

I' m using Photoshop which has a slicing tool It should work for simple slicing, I would think.

The html code generated when I save the graphic references all 12 slices.

Unless I' m wrong, I should be able to get five slices if that' s all I want. I' m assuming I' m not aligning the slicing tool correctly or something, though I' ve looked at the Help files and can' t find anything about this that I understand.

So, should I be able to get five slices instead of 12?

Are you making 5 slices, or are you slicing the image into 5 " segments" ?

5 " slices" could divide the image up into who knows how many segments, depending on how they overlap..?

IOW - if you make 3 horizontal lines across a piece of paper it actually divides it into 4 segments... if you make two horizontal and one vertical (still just 3 lines) it actually creates 6 segments... and so on...

I' m not sure what you mean bobby.

When I use the slice tool, it creates a box not a line. So it' s similar to using the rectangle marquee tool as opposed to, say, the pencil tool. That' s why I think I' m getting so many extra slices: the rectangular " bounding box" of the slice tool doesn' t align precisely to other lines so I end up with extra slice slivers.

I must not be using the tool right and can' t figure it out. I' ve tried the Shift and Alt keys, no dice. This is driving me nuts :) as I somehow think it should be pretty easy.

Any other suggestions?

thanks, gail

Hmmm... sounds different than what I' m used to doing...

When you create your first " box" it should have " blocks" at the four corners... and you should be able to place your cpointer on one of those blocks and click > drag out the next box...

I guess I' ll have to jump into PS and look a little closer...

OK, thanks bobbie.

Also, someone emailed me offboard and suggested the problem may have to do with the fact that I have " Snap to" turned off, and am not using the guides. It was suggested I select the slice tool, then go to View/Snap To/Slices.

Plus it reminds me that I have to tell hubby to " Snap to it" more often. [:p]:)

There might be something useful here:

http://studio.adobe.com/learn/tips/glv6sliceimg/main.html

BTW - are we the only two PS users on the forums today? :)

Actually I have been following this thread very closely and am in the same boat as Gail - I just can' t seem to get it to slice like I want. :(((

I have done one, but saving only the slices, not the html. I haven' t had a chance to build the page to see if the slices worked or if I have the little tiny slivers of slices that I usually get with this method.

My usual standby effective method is what I would call very manual:

1. use the regular selection tool at a fixed size - predetermined by my calculation by zooming in on the image to about 600% and looking at the rulers
2. copy merged
3. file>new which is now predetermined by PS at the exact size of the slice
4. edit>paste
5. save for web

GOT IT!!!!!!! :)

I decided to email someone I know uses Photoshop. I also emailed a person who has a website dedicated to teaching others to use Photoshop and he was kind enough to reply, almost instantly. Several Outfronters have given me A LOT of support as I’ve struggled through learning this. Thank you ever so much! Like so many things, the solution turns out to be something really rather basic.

Here' s how to slice more precisely without getting all those slivers (which I believe Adobe calls sub-slices). I use Photoshop 7.0 so comments may or may not apply to earlier versions. Here are the steps:

1. SNAP TO: " Snap to" MUST be turned on (the Slice Tool must be selected to do so).

View > Snap to > Slices and Guides (or All)

2- GUIDES: add Guides, if desired. Refer to the Help menu for instructions on using them which is pretty similar to how guides are used and moved in Page Layout programs.

View > New Guide

3- ZOOM: zoom up to around 300% when slicing

A few tips I discovered:

- You can tweak settings for guides, grids and slices in the preferences menu. Edit > Preferences
- you can Clear (all) Slices via the View menu; or individually with the undo and step backward commands, or via history palette
- You can delete, edit, divide, add urls and alt tags and more to individual slices by right-clicking on each when using the Slice Tool. DO NOT miss the Slice Type drop down menu, where you can select “no image.” Cool!
- When you “Save for Web,” use the slice tool to select various slices to work on. Double-clicking a slice reveals a pop-up menu where you can add various snippets of info.
- The Snap To feature is a must when you duplicate a slice for rollovers

For slicing large images it takes some practice because you can' t see the entire image on a monitor such as mine which is 17."

Anyway, I practiced a bit last night. If I wanted five slices, I got them! If I wanted more or less, I got exactly the number I wanted!

Have I conquered all? Nope. There is an art to slicing, knowing where to slice. I may start a new thread on this topic.

So Nancy and Bobbie, snap to it! Get slicing precisely!
