Value of a Web - 1/21/2003 10:50:27
I find that I spend a good amount of time expalining to prospective clients the value of a good web site and why my fees are my fees.

Sometimes I simply tell them that they need to go and get other estimates for the work from " the big boys" in our metro. The chump change that I am charging in comparison is no were close to the thousands that other firms charge.

Any ideas?

Barry

Barry,

I can relate to what you are saying. I know for a fact we are one of the least expensive designers in our area.

I know I have told some people to shop around & they come back. Others have come to us after they have gotten ridiculous prices from other places.

One of the things I stress to people is that design work does take time & that they are going to be dealing with me directly. I am not going to have my assistant calling them. If they have questions - they can call or email me.

After they tell me what they want I will explain that this normally cost $ but because of this or that it costs this.

I will also show them other sites I have done & that normally closes the deal.

Erin

Hi,

Important post:

Sometimes customers come and ask for a Web Site to promote their company products. I look at the work and ask for reasonable fees which make me feel satisfied that my effort is covered.

It apears lately that the price I ask if much cheaper than other offices. They leave and go to the expensive one, then regrets it later.

Customers for some extent have linked hight quality to high prices.

Erin is right, the customer should know the amount of work his/her site requires in order to apreciate if the price is high or low.

It is not easy to get customers out there.

Just an aside....

When shopping for a service or some tangible product I never...

Buy the most expensive no matter what.

Buy the cheapest no matter what.

I tend to compare the mid level areas and choose the higher end of that range.

Brian

While I' m not a designer, I do sell a web-based service ( SEO) and have run into similiar problems with clients who think my fees are high and just know they can get a better " deal" somewhere.

Guess who my best salesman is? My competition. Once people find out what they charge and how they operate, I hear from them again. Happens all the time....

The second best sales tool I have is my client roster, both past and present. Some of my clients are my biggest cheerleader and send/draw a lot of attention and business my way. Because of this, I now work with a large number of referrals which assures me of quality clients who already know about what I do -- and what I charge!

Keep offering quality work at reasonable prices and people will come. Nice people do finish first!!
