" Include" question.... - 1/23/2003 13:17:32
Okay, now that I' ve discovered " include" (which by the way is just as good as sliced bread to me now!), I have a question (and probably more)...

When creating a page that will used as an " include" of other pages, do I NEED to create THAT page in frames too or should I just create the page that will use the ' include' in frames?

Again, MANY thanks to those who introduced me to " include" . GAWD, it' s the greatest discovery! :)

Think of Include as copy > paste

Anything (and everything) in an include page is going to be copy > pasted into the main, or parent page by the server before being sent to the browser...

When it reaches the browser it will be part of the parent page as if it were there all along...

So you don' t want to recreate an entire page or frameset as an include... only the " piece" of the page that you want to be included...

BTW - how are you using an include with a frameset? A framed page typically won' t use includes, because the framework is already grabbing seperate pieces to create the whole...

Hey what are you guys talking about? ' Include' ? Please fill me in, been using FP for about 3 months off and on now, not doing anything to complicated, just making web pages for teachers at my school for my web design class, and I would be very happy to be introduced to this...include?

Teacher is a slacker...doesnt really teach much, what ive learned, learned by myself.

Hi again Sparky,

Actually there are no " frames" to talk about. You would normally lay out your page using a table and place the " include" in the cell of the table where you want that content to appear. I generally also lay out the include using a table, especially if it is a navigation menu. There' s a good tutorial on tables (and more links) by our favorite abbeyvet here. Check it out.:)

Egats! I meant to say " table" and not " frame" Sorry for the confusion!

As I play along more with it, I' m learning what it' s all about and how to make it work.

Question: If I create a ' Top Include' page for navigation and use JS, will it work in all pages that contain the ' Top Include' without having to transfer over the JS to those pages too? I hope that made sense. :)

Again, many thanks!

Sainted,

This is all new to me so I' m not the best teacher. Hopefully this link below will work and take you to the thread that discusses ' include' ....

I would highly recommend learning as much as you can about ' Includes' - it' s a beautiful thing. :)

There are two schools of thought on " including" a Javascript...

One is to create seperate include files for each " piece" of the script. One for the stuff that goes in the header (if any) one for the main piece of the script... etc. And include them accordingly...

the other is to create one JS include and place the header portion in the body of the include page (when using FP Includes, don' t know how this works with SSI)
