Hosting vs. Outsourcing - 1/23/2003 20:04:27
All,

I have a client who is ready for me to build their website. However, they are very much interested in hosting their site internally as opposed to outsourcing.

Typically, I would go hands down for just paying a fee per month and having someone else worry about security, updates, viruses, backups, support, and so forth.

Well, does anyone know what are the things my client would need to do (generally) to set up a computer to work as a server in a Win2K environment, on a T1 connection? I also need to develop a check list of things that they would need to be concerned with.

I basically just need to send the MIS Manager a general idea of the amount of stuff she needs to take into consideration before she bites more than she can chew.

Note: The company will only have one site.

Thanks, Karl

    First a web server:
  • WIN2K Advanced Server w/ IIS5 - $3999.00
  • Linux w/ Apache - less than $100.oo

    Two DNS servers
  • Ons can be on the same box as the web server

    A mail server
  • Exchange - $699.00 (for a small company)
  • - $3,999.00 (large company)
  • Plus the server to run it on

A T1 is OK to start with, but if there is much traffic you' ll need more

Thanks Gil,

Someone needs to put together a listing of why one should choose to outsource rather than do it yourself.

It seems to make so much sense to me.

I will wait to see if anyone has anything else to add before I contact the client.

Thanks again,

Karl

You also need backup/recovery tapes or whatever, a technical person to administer the server, add updates, fix problems, etc. and most importantly in this day & age, keep the server secure.
