How can I judge the " worth" of a web site in $?

Well, duh, Micah? This is sort of a broad question.

What do you mean? You want to convert euros to dollars? :)

no I mean the actual $. If I wanted to weigh how much www.leisure-ideas.com , was worth in $ for example, other than getting a costly valuation done - is there ways to judge.

I say this because one day I might be in a position to sell up and move abroad and I' m curious as to my assets.

How much does it bring in for $ now? How long can you expect that to last? How much does it (will it) cost you (or someone else) to maintain (improve) along the way so it doesn' t decrease in value?

How much $ value can an artist put on his work at the outset?

From where I sit you' re already abroad so what' s the problem?:)[:p]:)

Oh, congrats on the avatar contest.:)

I say this sincerely, Micah. Perhaps if we must to ask a question like this, that is when we need a professional the most. This is something only you can determine. What is costly anyway? It could " cost" if you sell for too little!

I think Mike raised all the main questions that need to be asked and answered. When my husband and I sold our business, we had our accountant help us determine a price. The selling price was based on such things as the worth of tangible equipment, supplies and inventory and gross and net income.

There are less tangibles with websites so I suspect income and profit will factor a lot in determining price. So will things such as " good will." How much competition you have at the time may also effect asking price.

btw, we used a pro to help us determine the value of our business but not to sell it. After we determined the price we wanted, we advertised, sold it on our own and saved one heck of bundle on realtor fees. :) What we paid in taxes to Uncle Sam...well, that' s an entire other subject. [:' (]

:)That isn' t what you said but I think the questions are still valid...
from your point of view.

Oh but it is. It can be a combination of sculpture (form), literature (content), poetry (flow) and art (imagery). Don' t underestimate the " creation" .:)

Me too, I just embellished a little. hat' s off for a favorite.:)

Think about it from a business stand point. How long would it take the site to earn back the cost of purchasing it?

Then again, if you just like it, buy it.

I went through a site sale a few months ago. They asked for all sales records for the last two years, tax filings/amount, etc.. Their initial offer was two years of sales in one lump sum. I turned it down as they wanted my customer DB. My wife and I debated and debated. We finally concluded that our privacy policy stated we would never do this. We stuck to our ethics. The company came back with a lower offer, we accepted. They also took into account raw log files, news letter list, etc..

I think in the end it is all in the mind of the beholder or a site is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

The question of value really comes down to -

Is it profitable?
What is the potential for profit?
What is the growth potential?
How much traffic?
What valueable data do you have stored related to the site and customers?
Value of the domain.
Time value - What it would cost to develop from scratch.

It' s hard to establish it exactly. You' d need to hire a consultant and/or appraiser.
