Designing a site that is for sale? - 2/6/2003 12:21:51
I was approached by someone wanting a free website... I agreed to design if they allowed me to host, charging $40.00 monthly (including 1 hour per month for maintenance and $35.00 per hour for overflow).

First, they said there was a lot of traffic to the site... I checked into their free stats program to find that a lot of traffic to them means 165 visitors per week. (My website that averages little traffic (to me) averages 40,000 weekly).

Then, I looked, as they have three domains for the site, and none of them are marketed in any search engine... I pressed further in WhoIs to find the domain for sale FOR $5,000,000 !!! And the other two for $2,500,000 !@!!!!@@@#$%$$^%$#$%#%^&%

Now, they responded to my offer of $40 per month with :" Can you work something out for cheaper than $40 per month and put your logo on it? Also, can you develop the website and let us see what you come up with before we pay any fees? " So I changed the contract to $50.00 per month and added a clause for the sale, giving me a 20% commission.

Wanted to know if this sounded fair to you all?? This person charges $999.00 per month for ads on his front page! It has been a while since I have had such a good laugh. Plus, the site is my husband' s line of business, so I am interested in it just for giggles.

Thanks.

Noone is ever going to sell a domain for $5,000,000. Not a domain, a site perhaps but not a domain. Just because that is the price they are have put on it, does not make it worth more than the cost of registration.

I would be very interested to see reciepts that show that anyone has actually paid $999 for an ad on such a site. It really seems most unlikely.

Anyone can put any price they like on a domain they own, and any price they like on placing an ad on the home page. It has no meaning unless there are people willing to pay it.

For $5,000 I' ll send you an email!

This is right up there with the " web businesses" up for auction on eBay. " This domain was valued at $45,000." WHO CARES! I can charge whatever I want for web design, templates, etc. Unless I find someone willing to pay that price, I' m toast!

I' d cut your client loose and pursue someone who does not belong under the big top wearing a bright red nose and big shoes!

this person is nuts. he/she may get $500/domain. The Internet BOOM on domains is over. And $999/mo for banners is laughable with no traffic.

I agree with Cooper. Cut ' em loose. Do not sell yourself short to get the business. You will find that when you do this, especially when you do not want to, you eventually spend a lot more time on it than you want to.

Do not get me wrong, in some cases you will find building a site for a group/organization for free to be really heartwarming. But you will know when this situation comes up.

Your client sounds like a headache waiting to happen.
