Very Slow Save/Publish Speed - 2/7/2003 9:42:33
Hey, I' m new here and really like the forums you have set up! Lots of good information....

My problem that led me here is that whenever I make changes to a page on my site and save those changes, it takes about 20 minutes to save. However, if I look at that page online, about a minute after I hit the save button, the changes appear, but it still takes another 20 minutes for FrontPage to finish before I can move on to other pages. Does that make sense?

I thought it was because of my save settings, so in the Tools - Options box, I have selected to publish only " changed pages" , and I thought this would help, but so far nothing. I' m using FrontPage 2002. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can do? Thanks!
bobby

FP does more than just change your pages when it publishes... if you have a lot of pages in your web, and are on a dial-up connection, it could take a while to finish " processing web updates"

I have one web that I play with from work, on a 64K line, and it can take 10 - 15 minutes to update...

Thanks for your reply...there are a lot of pages and files saved, including .asp and some other stuff. But I' m on a dsl connection that is very fast for everything else.

The more I read about this online the more it seems like I' m just going to have to accept it. Not very good when I have to update almost every single page on the site for my boss. :)

You shouldn' t be having that problem on broadband... unless you' re making changes to all 300 pages every time... if you only change a few pages and it' s taking that long... hmmmmm.....

Are you watching a DVD while downloading the new Matrix Reloaded trailer, four .mp3 files, and running a Windows update at the same time? [:p]

Anyone else know what this could be?

:edit:
Which firewall do you use?

Of course not, you think I' m crazy? Never do I run more than three .mp3 files when I' m doing all that other stuff. :)

But seriously, I' ve tried saving immediately after restarting the computer without opening any other programs, and it still happens. I actually just got an error code at the end of the latest never-ending save:

*Could not find a web server at " www.gainesvillebuilders.net" on port 80. Please check to make sure the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service.*

This doesn' t happen each time, but could it have something to do with it? Or is the server basically timing out because it' s taking so long to save?

Oh, and for the firewall....I' ll have to do some research. That was all loaded previously by my boss, and I' m not sure how it' s set up...

Ok, so the firewall is built into the router...here' s some information on it.

Well, I' ve tried various things and it still doesn' t work. Every time I try to save a page, it takes literally 20 minutes. I also get a " web server busy" often. Could it be the server instead of something I' m doing in FrontPage? But the site speed is fine online, so I' m confused.

Moved to server forum for you, but I' m curious why not just work off the copy on your hard drive and then publish it to the server? Are there any problems with the server connection then?

This is not a very helpful answer but I had that problem with a client' s site I was working on a long time ago now. Repeatedly and over quite a long period of time and it was a major pain.

I contacted the host and they told me it was " because the site is a FrontPage site and therefore there is a problem with the way it is constructed" . Talk about bulls and red rags!!! :):)

As an experiment I published to site to another server and there was no problem there at all. I persuaded my client to change hosts and the problem never recurred.

In other words I don' t know what causes it or how to solve it, but it is a server and not an FP issue I think.

really sounds like a server timeout. how much is being updated??? if it' s just text and " changed files only" then something is wrong on the server side. also the last few weeks have been hard on the Windows server sites (slammer) which has had the effect of kinda slowing down the internet....
