Deleting Win2000 Server W3SVC Log Files - 2/8/2003 18:04:33
I' ve searched high and low for a fast and easy way to clean up W3SVC log files on a Win2000 server without sucess. I tried a search of TechNet and the MS knowledge base without success. (Just in case: I' m not talking about the event log, which has it' s own " clear" option in the viewing window. I' m talking about the IIS W3SVC log.) The log files are starting to hog space and are the most fragmented data on the HDD. I dread the idea of opening each folder and manually deleting each file, even if I use " select all" +delete for all files on each folder. There are 100s of log files. I' ve got beetter things to do. Somewhere in the back of my mind I thought I once read that I could simple delete the log file folders in bulk - and that IIS would simply create a new folder for each virtual the next time a HTTP request was directed to the virtual. However, I' m not going to risk this until I can confirm it. I once saw a script for cleaning up log files but it was specific to Win NT. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gil - How did you accomplish this task on NT? Perhaps W2K doesn' t vary that much in approach.

Gee, it' s been a while... Seems like we just opened the MMC - Logs and deleted them. I' m sure Rian or Storm might have a better explanation?

This is where I' m antsy. Do I simply delete the logs versus opening the logs and deleting the text files contained in each? Somewhere along the line I thought they could be deleted and that IIS would simply re-populate the log files but......until I' m certain. I thought an answer would be more readily available on the web, at MS, etc. but, unless I' m querying the wrong keywords the answer is doing a good job of hiding.

you can delete the folder and it will be re-created. However, if you are runniing and web stats software this will cause a problem with producing accurate stats. If you' re not and you don' t care about the logs delete the whole folder. Or you can write a small script file that deletes past a certain date.
