Some reasons to use an Handwriting Style Font - 2/17/2003 12:42:47
I' ve been asked to place the following in the Tips section. In another thread I explained why I used an handwriting font which can be seen here:

http://www.thenextstepcenter.com/contact.htm

The handwriting style font was chosen for two reasons: it adds a personal touch to the page and is eye catching.

Years ago when I was preparing campaign literature, I ran across a study which found that a spot of " handwriting" on printed materials catches attention better than most anything else on a page, particularly when the page contains a lot of info. In the U.S. we receive a great amount of junk mail. Most of us typically toss the stuff in the trash. But if there is handwriting in a prominent place the inclination is to read at least that before the flyer or ad ends up in the garbage. In the U.S. many politicians use handwriting style fonts on campaign literature for these very reasons, even if only for their signature.

I' d like to add the following additional comments:

- There are times the handwriting font could be placed on a slant, giving an appearance of a brief, personal message scribbled on a page;

- Don' t over use this type of font or it will lose it' s affect;

- An handwriting font should complement other text on the web page on which it appears. Try different styles to see which one looks best;

- Don' t use a handwriting font just for the sake of affect: if the font conflicts with the overall artistic design of web page, don' t use it!

I' ve seen handwriting fonts used to great effect. When I was a kid, I was one of hundreds who were hired temporarily, twice a year, by a certain " clearing house" to sort the mail for their annual sweepstakes. A lot of their material would have a pre-printed message scrawled across it, saying something like " Credit Approved! --RHT" . I doubt many people actually believed that " RHT" (who did not exist) had personally signed their entry, but I think it worked very well for them. They still use it.

I use something like that on one of my current sites, but for a different effect. To give the site a somewhat arty, slightly exotic feel, I' ve used Brush Flash in a number of places. Since I didn' t think most people had that font on their pc, however, I decided I' d only use it in graphics. So I whenever I add text to a graphic element, I use that font. It' s on the navigation buttons, the banners, the pictures, etc, and becomes sort of a branding element.

DOH! --

I' m sorry Gail, but I mistook the topic as being that you were using a handwriting font in a style (sheet). I got excited! I' ve been cautious not to use handwriting type fonts in a style sheet as I am unsure what font would be most universal. Any one else have any ideas on this?

Great tip nonetheless, and thank you for taking the time!

Rick

Sorry, rwilliams...glad you found the tip useful however.

That' s excellent - your choice of where to use it is superb! But I thought (and maybe mistakenly so) that if I were to use a font that someone didn' t have installed on their PC that it wouldn' t show up. Please pardon my lack of knowledge here. I thought that if I wanted to use an unusual font that I should create an image out of it. Or is that exactly what you did and I missed it? :) Thanks for the great idea!

Regards,

One way you work around others possibly not having the font you use, is to have a few alternates in your tag line, like:

font face=" Liorah BT, script, French Script MT, arial, times new roman"

Alyice, it' s a graphic image, not text, which is the better way to do it.

If anybody wants the " Donnys Hand" font (seeing as though it is hard to find) and doesn' t want to bug _gail or anyone else, you can download it from:
