Now that Getty Works is gone, does anyone know where to go for good images and graphics? Thanks.

I' ve found some great graphics and photo images at Microsoft' s Design Gallery Live. gail http://dgl.microsoft.com/?DPC btw, if you seach for images from some of Microsoft' s programs such as FrontPage and Publisher, the images can be downloaded and saved right into the Clip Gallery. They will even be sorted by category. Insert > Picture Clip Art > Clips online

THanks all. I use DGL quite often for small things; however, most of the sites I do are either pregnancy, breastfeeding or sex related and you just don' t get those kinds of pics on Microsoft lol. Will check them all out. Y' all are so wonderful!

This is a cool website I go to every so often. All the images are free. It' s kind of a peer to peer photo sharing. People upload photos that they have taken themselves and share them with other graphic designers. The more people who share, the larger the site gets. http://stock.d2.hu/ But after checking the link, it looks like they are relauching. Guess you' ll have to bookmark it and wait!

I also recommend istockphoto.com - you get a couple of free images for signing up, and a couple more if you use multiple e-mails. lol. Lots of pics, and if you stick on it is pretty cheap. They also stand-bye and have quick responses if you have tech troubles.

I' ll be honest with you summer, there are a couple different photo sites out there, what I' ve found to be the best is to join one of these photo sites where people are looking for critiques of their work and simply asking them to either A. take some stock photos for you or B. find ones that you like and buy them. Usually photographers on these sites will feel that getting their pictures anywhere/getting them purchased for any price is good, and rightfully so as not only can they use the original photo for portfolio work, but if you purchase the photo they can use your site as their client portfolio. It works out both ways, you get much better priced photos (I have bought some for $3-$5) which have been very useful, and I have simply included the author' s name on the site when I used it. A simple Photos by: ___________ can apparently save you $95 and all the hassles associated with royalties etc. since you are working directly with the photographer himself/herself and you can set the rules with the photographer as such. It' s more of a marketplace where you can bargain than a store where you browse through the pictures, find one you like, and pay an incredibly marked-up price for :). Just an idea you might want to look into. Drop me a line if you have any questions or if you' d like to be pointed to some of these sites. Sincerely, Aveed Khaki Ipsilon Blue aveed@ipsilonblue.com

Hmmm. You guys spend a lot of money (for the most part on purchasing images). Why not save some money and purchase a program like Adobe Illustrator and make your own graphics? This way, it would be original and the chances of everyone using the same clip art would be less. Illustrator creates graphics that are vectored, ideal for web. I'm just curious. Ofcoarse, fonts are fonts, nothign you can do about that and photos' are photo's.

What an eye opener - I need to start an image bank! I sort of have my own anyway. I shoot a lot of Virtual Tours and nearly always shoot stills at the same time. If I see a good sky or an interesting scene I shoot it. I shoot most of my pictures digitally and store them on CD. If I'm building a site I often shoot specifically for that site. Apart from anything its good fun. I use a Nikon 5000 (5 megapixels). This gives the quality I need and is suitable for high quality prints up to A3 as well. Digital cameras are a lot cheaper now and a reasonable quality 3 megapixel camera can be bought for $200-$300 (or Euros if you prefer). I would recommend that anyone building websites for a living should have one. $1200 for 6 images!!!! 2 of my cameras! Nigel

I have thrown away thousands of slides! I have seen thousands of images on the web and in print media that are works of art.

I also recommend stock xchng, everything is free, just register which is also free i'm a photographer on sxc.hu and the above quote is misleading. Yes, there is no charge for the photos, but the users sign an agreement that they will abide by the permissions set by the photographer. Most on SXC.HU do not have a problem with you using their images, they just want to be asked and sometimes want it in writing. That's a pretty reasonable request. Remember, if you use a pic that includes people you need a model release in writing. That is not a grey area either. big time lawsuits for using images of people without their consent. I don't have a problem sharing my work on sxc, my only request is that you honor what i've asked of you (written permission) if you choose to use my images If you don't and i find that you use my work without asking, there could be a lawsuit on copyright infringement. I still own the image and the copyright and unlawful use will not be tolerated. Not something you want to go through, i'm sure. quote:
[photos' are photo's The other thing that concerns me is I get the feeling that most of you seem to feel that photos should be inexpensive....but high quality at the same time. quote:
But my photos aren't as appealing as many other folks' photos. Photography is an art form and does take some talent to pull off, not everyone can do it or have the equipment to do it. What if i said, "websites are websites" and copied an entire site from any of the designer's here? I would imagine that most, if not all of you would be screaming theft. I'm just trying to shed some light on a subject that has now become some sort of an issue for me. I'm attempting to sell some of my photography now and whenever anyone uses my images I want to know about it. That's all. After all, it is my work. Lastly, images are images, but they say a thousand words and convey many meanings. That's why you guys, and me (i do some website design on the side too), are always looking for good sources for images. Just ask, and there shouldn't be a problem but don't ask and you may get into a heap of trouble and your wallet may get thinner to boot.

very true being a photographer myself maybe you should try a different image library or watermark your images and show them on the web yourself.

i do intend to show them on my own photography site but i also believe in being part of a community that helps each other out. I only want to be asked for permission, that's all.

Try www.istockphoto.com Most of the pictures are Royalty Free and they go for only 50 cents per picture. IStockPhoto has recently doubled their prices . . . to $1 per photo. Still a real deal. It's definitely the first place I look for stock photos, although getting the exact right photo is tough.

The problem I have is that there seems to be an old model drawn from print advertising that users want some sort of exclusivity and are willing to pay high royalty fees for high-quality and resolution photos. With the explosion of the internet, there is a very large demand for good quality and medium/low resolution photos. It doesn't seem to be met very well. I feel $20-40 for a non-exclusive use would be fair. Large selection, good search capabilities, and no monthly fees are my other requirements. If you know of that, I'd be very happy.
