Different speeds - 2/18/2003 19:01:58
Hi - I' m running a speed script on this site:

http://www.ukchristianbooks.co.uk/fact/

I can only test it on 600k. Mainly, on the " run test" button - users with 56k modems and less should be taken to the html site - users with over that should be taken to the flash site.

Can you let me know?

On cable (down = 1.5 meg up / 245 Kb down) I went to Flash but it did take a bit:) to load.

Hi Micah,
Assuming by now you know my connection speed. [:' (]

http://www.ukchristianbooks.co.uk/fact/ One minute five seconds to load.

http://www.ukchristianbooks.co.uk/fact/html.htm Five seconds to load.

users with 56k modems and less should be taken to the html site

Did I read this wrong? I expected to be redirected to the 28K site above. I had to click " 28K" to load the page.

if you hit the " run test" it should determine your bandwidth and take you to the html site.

I really need to find out if the " run test" part is working

ok - i think that the run test thing works now (thanks to J-Man)

i' m not overly concerned about the size of the flash site because I have the option of flash & html (I think I' ll put another link on the flash preloader too - so if people are impatient they can switch to html.)

can anyone on a 56k modem and lower test the " run test" for me please?

I think your heading in teh right direction Micah. The link in the swf to goto the html version is keen, i wish more sites did that. Is your flash site more that 1 swf, cause if it is you can preload the swf into an array via JS or use invisible frame. So you would have a general flash template to speed the loading time, also you should have this script on the non-flash site homepage, so if the user does not have JS enabled it doesn' t matter. and for search engines.

I' m excited to see the final site... please do keep informed... thanks

Hi Micah,
Still received the Flash page: http://www.ukchristianbooks.co.uk/fact/flash.html

It goes to bandwidth test in process so my security settings are not the problem.

By the way, the person on the page reminds me of Foster Brooks, a comedian here in the U.S. who past away in December.

Hi, Micah,

I' ve got ADSL, and I went to the Flash site when I ran the test. That' s what you want, I think. It didn' t finish loading, but I think that' s ' cos you' re still constructing everything...

John.

hello again - ok raised number to 4.5 (just for fun) how does this affect the " run test" ? Do you go to flash site of html site? what is your dial up/cable speed?

thanks

RE: Different speeds - 3/8/2003 7:30:31
I am on cable, so it took me to the flash site. It then took about 45 secs to load.

Just checked at www.thebandwidthplace.com and at the moment my connection is at 239.4 kilobits per second

Just an observation. Although my speed is quite often higher than that, I always, if given a choice between HTML and Flash, choose HTML. And I like to be given the choice. I just can' t be bothered looking at Flash. If I get Flash without having been offered a choice I either leave right away or if it is a site I am really interested in look at the ' loading.....' for about 3-5 seconds and if its not happening leave then.

Based on that I am not really convinced that doing this automatically is a terrific idea.

The only exception to the above is where I am surfing with a 4 year old and there are Flash games or cartoon things loading. Then I wait. But for anything that could be vanilla html, I want vanilla html.

On 56K it took me to the flash site....after a VERY long wait, sorry, didn' t time it. The good news is that the " I can' t wait, take me to the html site" link works. :)

Hi Micah,

Still on cable. Double checked at the same place as Katherine, 1.5 megabits per second. It took me to the Flash page.:)
