Layout and planning opinions and assistance - 3/2/2003 11:34:57
I have put up this site at various stages... I have, with ASP and a lot of database space, been able to go from 1500 pages down to 700 (or a little more).

I have a TON of visitors, but I need to know what isn' t looking right so that I can get more of a community feel to it. My main problem is that I am not allowed to advertise my site on many other sites, and the ones who will allow me cost too much for my budget.

The site is http://breastfeed.net or http://thebestfedbaby.com .

It' s a very nicely designed site, maybe you just need to give it more time.

Visually, I have a few suggestions for the home page.

The page is VERY long. Perhaps some of the bottom content can be shifted off to other areas. I' ve always felt that a home page shouldn' t overwhelm people with info, but be an overview for what else is in a site. Let people get a feel for what' s available then, through links, decide what they themselves want to read and where they want to go. To be honest, I quickly leave sites that have so much text that it could fill up a War and Peace novel. I can' t stand scrolling a lot on a home page.

The home page is also very symmetrical. Perhaps you can vary the right and left columns, making one larger and one smaller to add variety. I think asymmetry has a place, just like minor chords do in music. Those minor chords really stand out and make you take note. If I recall correctly, think I mentioned some time ago about this site that I felt you should add a touch of accent color. Childbirth is a joyous time, not all " fleshtone." I use the term fleshtone in a figurative way. Add some LIFE to the site through color.

Really great site. I' ve given a link to it to my daughter who is expecting her first child this summer. :)

Left and right columns look too much alike. As gail pointed out, maybe have one of the columns differentiate from the other in some way. I also think that adding some color to the site would do wonders to it.

Very nice professional layout. Just need to bring it out more.

Just my .02 cents

Would you say the home page should be more like one of these pages?
http://thebestfedbaby.com/pregnancy/index.asp

I wanted to add more to the home page, but several tests online said it was way too large. I will work on the navigation bars, but I really have no clue what other colors to have. :)

Would it be wise to eliminate both or just the right bar in order to make the index page more appealing?

I have multiple personalities, so it literally depends on my frame of mind as to whether or not I am able to accomplish anything. For the past week I have not been able to budge much on this particular site and I would like ot get something done! :)

Yes! But I' d still try to do away with some of the right and left symmetry. Perhaps the Navigation and Newsletter tables don' t have to look exactly the same. I admire your curve without the jaggies (!) but you may not need it on both sides.

Someone in Outfront recommended this site some time ago to help with color schemes:

Love your script font, btw. What is it called?

I like the ' personal' touch of the hand-type scripts... some people acutally think I take the time to write and then scan in stuff! I' m thinking I should just create my own font...

the one on this site is Bickley Script .

I like the general look of it a lot also, and I think the addition of a bit more color would be enough to completely lift it.

I don' t think you need to lose navigation on either side, but I think if you took the right hand side bits out of the boxes, or used completely different boxes, and removed the headers they would be differentiated from the left side.

Perhaps try putting the newsletter stuff on a colored background and leaving the shopping ones unboxed or with just a fine line around them.

Here are some colors that may work for you - just a suggestion:
