Thumbs.db file - what is it? - 3/2/2003 13:59:26
On CDR backup, I always get the following screen prompt " the file Thumbs.db has extra information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of the file will not be affected. Information that might be lost includes: encrytable:$DATA" . I am not using any data base file for this particular site but do incorporate two of DPA software' s add-in Java Applet scripts for FP2002. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Hi Larry

I seem to recall that the file Thumbs.db is created by some FTP software packages (maybe Cuteftp??) when you ftp a site rather than use Frontpage publish.

Don' t take my word for this though. I am not absolutely certain :)

I do' t think it has anything to do with FTPing.

Are you using a photo gallery? I am pretty sure it is a file with some info about the small images used in a gallery.

Hi Larry,

Perhaps this article can clear up some of the confusion?:)

W2K and XP create a thumbs.db in every folder you view with Thumbnail view. It' s a database of the thumbnails generated for the folder.

Thanks so much for the informative replies! Apparently Thumbs.db files are created whenever FrontPage 2002 images are " browsed" with PaintShop Pro. Sounds like it' s safe to delete all these files without creating file conflicts elsewhere. Larry M.
