Logo: Use it, like it or not? - 3/3/2003 10:01:21
This may sound like a silly question but I' m serious as all get-out about asking it!
What do you do/say when a client gives you a non-professionally design logo, one they' ve been using for years? It may look acceptable on a printed page but not good at all on a website?
Do you suggest they have a graphic designer redo it (you risk insulting the client)? Do you suggest that you can modify it in some way...assuming that can be done? Do you just sorta not incorporate it into the site? Or do you set aside your professional judgement, bite the bullet and just use it?

it depends. if they' re paying for development, suggest it, but don' t be forceful. revamping their logo is not what you are being paid for. as a professional designer/develop, get used to dealing with what clients of non-web nature give you. if they are also having you consult on the development of the site, it' s a different matter. in such cases, make sure that you express your concerns and encourage a redesign if necessary.

One thing I have done the odd time is persuade them that a new one for online use would be a good idea, then incorporate the existing one somewhere visible but unobtrusive - for example in a footer or something.
Not always appropriate though.

Nah!
This wasn' t intended to point out any particular logo; I deal with small businesses who often have a friend of a friend of a friend who design this type of stuff for them at little or no cost.
I just want their sites to look nice. More importantly, I fully know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It' s their site and logo, not mine. Besides, I find most are very open to suggestions. Just wanted to know how some of you handle it.

Many companies have spent a lot on promoting their logo. It will be on their company letterhead, promotional materials, in their phone book ads, etc. If the logo is already established the company will probably want it on their website, ugly or not. :)

Doug is correct. Be considerate of the money some companies have spent on their print material. If you are fairly confident that changing it would not cause a lot of expense, I would approach the issue from a view of making a consistent presentation of their company, both electronic and print. Explain to them that their present logo does not present their image well on the web. You can sometimes also explain that with the web being a more high tech market, that their logo should represent this newer area of the company. Then offer to do up a few concepts for them to see. I would stay away from being critical of their existing logo. You never know who did it (including them...). Most people, when presented in a similar manner above usually are more then happy to see other concepts. If not, grit your teeth and use it.

I really like what abbeyvet suggested.
I recently had this exact situation that you are asking about... The company had recently hired a designer to revamp their old logo. Since the new logo had been created, which the client LOVED, they had had clothes imprinted and all of their print material redone with this new and horrid logo. Then they came to us for a web site...with this . . . logo that would not go away. I knew that I had to use it, but what I did was to create a new graphic image that I thought was much more professional looking and used it as my dominant image. I used their logo, but it was overshadowed by this new image. The client loved it. I told them that this would give continuity to their site and that I could use it in many ways throughout the site...bullet, background, etc. I did and they ended up having us design a mail publication afterwards and ta da...I included the new graphic from the web site...of course, I still had to use that original logo.
Anyway, long story, short message.
I also agree with Gary in that you have to respect a clients investment in their print material...it was probably first.

Just as a matter of interest, here are two sites where a print or alternative logo was used, but not as the main site logo.

Scroll right down to the bottom right and you will see the company logo.
