Webmaster or what?! - 3/7/2003 21:17:01
I' m not really asking for a debate about what qualifies one as a webmaster or not, but rather seek opinions as to whether is it appropriate to call yourself one when you don' t think you are. I consider myself a web designer, not master.

But I now keep an eye over a number of sites where I place my email address in case a site visitor needs to contact someone to report technical or similar problems. I think for most people, particularly non-net savvy, the phrase " Contact webmaster" is what they are used to and look for. In some places on these sites I am listed as the web designer, so I need something different for tech inquiries and reports.

Is using " webmaster" okay or is there a better word or phrase?

thanks, gail

<<$.02>>

As long as one has created the site and also maintains it. Then I consider them to be the webmaster. I don' t see it as being a master of web design, which I think you are gail (I' ve seen some of your work:)). I just see it as the person in charge of the site. I think it' s just a buzz word that caught on and most visitors are now accustomed to and know what it stands for.

So why buck the system if most folks identify the word as the one being in charge or maintaining the site.

BTW gail, aren' t you a webmistress? :)[:p]

There have been several " debates" here on this subject. Eventually we usually agree to disagree.

For the purpose of a footer, I would use webmaster - simply as it means you are in charge of the site.
Whether you delegate the tasks or not, doesnt make you any less of a webmaster.
However, if you promote your services as a " Webmaster" then it has a different meaning IMHO

Just the musings of an idiot...

Master, in the sense of being an expert and all knowing - would apply if you advertised yourself as a " Master Web Designer" .

Master, in the sense of being in control, as in a master/slave relationship - would apply where you control the web and it does what you tell it to do.

So - it' s a matter a semantics - Gail can call herself a webmaster when obtaining new clients because she is a master of design and development.
Gail can call herself a webmaster on the footer because she controls the site.

Or, did I just reiterate the obvious?
