Cells in my table keep moving when I add text - 3/8/2003 14:29:33
Does anyone know if there is a way to lock a cell in a specific place so it will not move or adjust as other cells do? I have tried setting specific cell sizes (height and width) on these cells, but when I add text to an adjacent cell, they start to spread out vertically like some demons straight from Hades.

Let me be a little more specific. In Photoshop, I have created several buttons for rollover images. Each button has been sliced into its own cell. These make up the left sidebar of the site I' m creating. To the right of these future links is the main text area of my site. This is the area that will change with each page. When I go to add text to this area, as I continue, all of my little cells with buttons to the left start spreading out. They won' t stay together and it is destroying my site. I have created the main table at 100% height and width. In each of the page' s main three columns (left sidebar, center text area, and right sidebar) I have all cells at fixed pixel heights except one, which is set at 100% so as to adjust to the screen size. What is going wrong? I have spent about 20 hours trying everything I can think of and am about to pass out. I am lost. Can someone save me?

Have you tried to " nest" your tables? That way what cahnges in one " column" , (which is actually a separate table), won' t effect another column.

You can also check the Tutorial on tables here for more info...

This won' t work at all. It' s best *not* to have height applied to any cells or the table itself... just apply the width when needed; the height will take care of itself. Depending on font sizing used, viewed with, etc, specific height cannot be set though there are tricks to ensure a minimum height when needed (a transparent vertical spacer in a cell)

Please either post a url for us to look at or paste the coding in here.

Nesting tables may be the solution or you may be able to do this with a single table... it' s much easier to tell if we can see it. :)

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am not sure how to nest tables when working with the code generated by Image Ready. Maybe there is nothing different. Here is the code that I am working with now. I hope this helps.

The table is much more complex than you probably need but I' m not getting any cells expanding or shifting when typing in any of them. If you can put a copy online so we can better see what you' re trying to do we may be able to give better help... I' m particularly confused about all the scheduled images and includes--- includes are usually used for a portion of the page where this looks like you have some includes for single images that are located on a htm file? If the one area is to have regular navigation buttons, they could all be in the same include and there' s probably no need to have them in their own table cells.

Besides the link caywind gave, try this one on includes (which also has a link to layout info). www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/getting_started/includes1.htm

Sometimes just seeing the coding helps, but without seeing the images to tell what look you want, it' s hard to give advice on this one on how to get there. :)

RE: Cells in my table keep moving when I add text - 3/9/2003 1:49:34
Linda, you have really made me think. Yes, I know it seems to be a rather complex table. Most of it, at least in terms of table structure, is what Image Ready generates from the slices that I created. The slices had to be complex because of the rollover images that I created in Photoshop. I would rather have a simplified table structure, but it seems that rollovers pose some complications in doing that.

Incidentally, you said that the cells did not expand or separate when adding text. Were you entering in the large, main text area? Also, were the image X blocks still in all other cells? That was what happened to me. All of the other image were intact, but I removed the one in the main text area and set the cell to top alignment, so I could begin entering text. Instead of entering text, just try it and hold down the ENTER key. When it gets to the bottom of the cell in the main text area, things go haywire.

Regarding the scheduled images and Includes, this is my first time using them. Actually, I didn' t want them scheduled. The Included Content option doesn' t give an option for entering a picture without a schedule as it does with a page. I tinkered with the Includes for days trying to figure out the best way to use them. I don' t wan' t shared borders, but I do want the option of changing any section of the page and have that change transfer to all pages in the site. Some of the images are in htm files because they are rollovers. I read every tutorial and couldn' t find anything that explained how to use FrontPage Includes with rollovers. The only way I could make it work was by adding the rollovers to an htm page, which gave me a page for the Include (the Include picture option only allows one picture--a rollover obviously has two). I originally had Java Script rollovers, but abandoned them in favor of the FrontPage hover button option when I couldn' t get the rollovers to sit right in the cell. The hover button ones worked.

You said, " If the one area is to have regular navigation buttons, they could all be in the same include and there' s probably no need to have them in their own table cells." I think you are right, but I will need to play with that one.

I would love for you to see the images if you think that would help. I have publish the page in question at [link=]www.darncoolstuff.com[/link]. Sorry for being so long-winded.

Thanks a million!:)

RE: Cells in my table keep moving when I add text - 3/9/2003 17:55:15
Details:

All main tables would be the same width as the total width of the graphic; here it' s about 772. The first two rows you see are two separate tables, each at centered, width 772, no padding. Insert the first table and give it three columns - the second column will hold the rollover. Insert the second table just below the first one to hold your main header image. Now make a folder to hold your includes (if you like, to keep it organized :)) and save this in it as header.htm.

Open a new page and Insert > component > Include > header.htm

Just under that, insert another 772 width table; this one with two columns. Set the left cell at the same width as the images that will be here (ie. 177). Save as template.htm.

On a new page, insert a table at that same width, such as 177 pixels; one column, two rows. Use a saved slice of the image to set the background of the table with. The top cell will hold the menu rollover buttons. They do not need to be in seperate cells and once you study it it you should be able to figure out what you need and what you don' t in the coding. Can Image Ready create the rollovers without a table? (for anyone needing it, here' s the link to the Mighty Mouseover Machine ) -- The bottom cell will hold the bottom image of the sidebar. Save in the include folder as menu.htm.

On template.htm insert > include page > menu.htm into left column. :)

It' d be best to create another include page for footer.htm and insert this onto your template page. Even if it' s blank now, it' ll be easy to add info to this footer if you ever want it in the future.

Since the width of the tables are 772 pixels, they' ll allow anything beyond that to show that background of the page. Instead of putting the background in the side columns, just set it as the page background.

Once template.htm is set up to your satisfaction, save as default.htm (or index; whatever you' re using). This template page can be opened and " saved as" for each new page you want.

Linda, if I had an ounce of musical talent, I would write a song for you! As that' s not the case, I hope that my deepest appreciation will suffice. You have taken the cloudy and made it crystal clear. You' ve taught me more about layout then I had gleened in many tutorials and lot' s of books. I hope someday that I will have your level of skill and can pass the favor on to someone else in need. I am so grateful for the time you invested and the precise detail you provided. You truly are an angel!:)

Mike -

I' m very glad to have been able to help! Thanks for the support! (where' s that blushing smiley?) :)

One thing I didn' t note, but to keep in mind for future use... setting up table backgrounds works different in NN browsers (at least the older ones; I' m not sure about the new versions) than IE. NN will repeat the background in each cell instead of using it for the table as a whole. This won' t effect the layout above, but you should check in one or two NN versions anyway as it also will sometimes show tables differently. IE is more forgiving of mistakes; NN isn' t. If there' s any problems, it' s usually a quick fix to the cell properties. :)
