Dave Brethauer -> Server error: Error 2... (3/11/2003 19:22:18)

I have a number of questions.

First, I' ve found a lot of info in the MS-Knowledge base
but the articles all state that they apply to FP2000, Win
9X and or IE5. I' m running (or should I say trying to
run) FP2002, WinXP with IE6. Do these articles apply to
me?

Next, the complete error I' m encountering is " Server
error: Error 2 opening registry key
Software/microsoft/shared tools/web server
extensions/ports/port 80" . I find Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article - 264922 which provides steps that direct
one to go into the Registry and change the permissions
for the Web Server Extensions key. I have the following
Group/User names: Administrators, CREATOR OWNER, Dave,
Power Users, System, Users. I gave all of them Allow
Full Control/Read privileges. But the CREATOR OWNER -
when I click Apply - removes the check marks for Allow
and defaults to just Special permissions.

I close the registry, reboot and viola, I get the same
error.

I attempted to search for this error in the newsgroup but
had no luck.

I did find Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 264951
which goes into a discussion regarding the removal of
CREATOR OWNER and details how to remove and reinstall FP
Server Extensions - however this article again states
that it applies to FP2000.

Does one still need to install FP Server Extensions if
one is using XP/FP2002? If so, where does one find this?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Dave

Probably not. When are you geting the message? When trying to start FrontPage?

Is it XP Pro or XP Home edition?

More info can be found here... http://www.studiodeluxe.net/pws/index.htm

no, the server extensions are only necessary if you have a web server of some type installed. XP home has iisues with web servers, (misspelling intentional)

Dave Brethauer -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/12/2003 10:38:01)

I get the error when attempting a File/Jimco Open Web (I was getting another error " The folder ' http://domainname.com/' isn' t accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location... I posted this problem to on of the MS newsgroups and a suggestion was made that I use the Jimco add-in - which I' m now trying out).

I' m running XP Pro.

Thanks for the link to studiodeluxe. I' ll check the site out.

Regarding XP and a webserver. Using FrontPage 2000 with Win 98/ME I installed PWS, but that doesn' t seem to be an option with XP - or am I wrong here?

Thanks again for the help.

Dave

I have seen strange problems if you happened to install IIS while not logged in to XP as a local administrator.

Yes. Fortunately you are using XP Pro. Pro will run Internet Information Server 5.0 and that is where you install the FrontPage Extensions. I' m not sure where IIS 5 is located, but you can probably find it at MS...

I would suggest that you back up any webs or docs, completely un-install your FP2002, login as administrator, Install IIS, and then install FP again.

Here' s a site that has tons of IIS resources and answers http://www.iisanswers.com/

Doug G -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/12/2003 14:22:31)

XP Pro includes IIS 5.1, no downloads are needed.

You install it off the XP CD, open Control Panel - Add Remove Programs - Add Remove Windows Components to find the IIS installer.

FP Extensions are automatically installed but I' m not sure which version of the extensions, probably FP2000.

Dave Brethauer -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/12/2003 16:46:00)

First off, mucho thanks to you caywind and you Doug! I posted to the MS-Newsgroups and got a lot of info passed my way - all FP2000 and Win9X/ME related! Nothing at all that has taken me down the road I' m currently on.

Okay, I uninstalled FP, logged in as administrator and installed IIS off the CD. I then logged out as administrator and logged back in as myself and then reinstalled FP.

When I opened up FP I got a message " no web found..." . I clicked cancel and then attempted to do a File/Open Web.

Now I get " The folder ' www.domainname.com' isn' t accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the filename contains a / or \" .

The web is password protected but with FP2000 I would get a login screen, not a message telling me that the the site is password protected!

So I clicked OK - can' t do anything from here - and in the task pane there is now, under open a page, the website. So I clicked on it and viola - I get the homepage displayed in FP but nothing else.

I closed the page and opened up the site in IE - and then clicked on the " edit with FP" button - but again only the homepage is displayed, nothing else.

So following some advice that I' d gotten off on my posting to an MS-newsgroup I installed the Jimco Open Web add-in.

I then tried this path and viola - new error message! Okay, it' s not new you' ll find it in my original post - " Server error: Error 2..." . Now for this error message I' ve found some info on MS Knowledge Base - specifically article 264951 - but now I' m back to my original post.

I hesitate to start using information from an article that applies to FP2000. I' ve been unable to find info specific to FP2002 on the MS Knowledge Base!

This article lays out 5 steps:
1. Remove CREATOR OWNER from all files and folders in the Web Content Area. Don' t have any files or folders in the Web Content Area - assuming the web content area is talking about C:\documents and settings\dave\my documents\my webs?

2. Uninstall FP Server Extensions. Tough to do when I installed IIS but this install does include FP server extensions so I could uninstall them - but shouldn' t one uninstall IIS?

3. Delete the Web Server Extensions Registry Key. I can do this. Interesting though, if I select right click this key and select permissions I find a CREATOR OWNER? Is this what step one is referring too?

4. Assign Permissions on the Content Folder and Buffer Folder. This step lists 15 additional steps to take. Problem being I' m not able to find a " Content" folder on my PC!!

5. Install FP 2000 Server Extensions. See step 2!

Basically I' m lost as to what to do at this point.

caywind -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/12/2003 21:48:32)

Well after reading through the thread I see Doug' s post about the extensions...

One thing ... isn' t there a log file somewhere that give some more details. I' m not at a server right now but it might be the one called WECERR.TXT. I know what your' re going through, I botched a PWS installation once and it took a few hours and much talking to myself to get it straightened out. Actually I didn' t really botch it, the darn thing just wouldn' t work!

Let me check one thing though, but I need a server....

OK at a IIS server, the log files are in WINNT/system32/logfiles and are named inyymmdd with yymmdd being the date. Note that this is a NT server...

Once you have the IIS service and the extensions going you connect to the server via http://servername. That should at least give you the default page which is kept in c:\inetserve\wwwroot\

If you are working on the same computer as the server you can also try to connect to http://127.0.0.1 and see what happens

if these don' t work, find that log file

Doug G -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/13/2003 1:31:14)

For what it' s worth, in my case I just installed XP Pro, installed IIS and everything worked fine without any additional anything using FP2K and Visual Studio 6 InterDev.

IIS has this wonderful file called a Metabase which will drive you nuts if something there gets screwed up. There is a metabase editor similar to regedit somewhere on the MS site.

As far as " content" files, IIS by default puts content under

C:\IntePub\wwwroot\

The instructions about permissions on content files & folders would refer to files under this path. As far as registry key permissions, that' s something I try to avoid changing unless I' m 100% certain what' s going on.

You should not have any additional problems if you uninstall and reinstall the FP server extensions, although in my case I didn' t have to do anything about the extensions on my XP box.

Good luck. IIS is a very nice web server when you get it going right.

caywind -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/13/2003 3:11:42)

yep I had a typo

the files are under
c:\inetpub\wwroot

not c:\intserve\wwwroot

Dave Brethauer -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/13/2003 11:52:02)

The next sound you are about to here is my foot going through my PC!

Before we go any further here. I pulled out my old PC - Win 98 with FP2000 - and plugged it in. When I attempt to access my website I' m getting the same Server error message. At this point I have to believe that my problem lies not on my PC but on the Server.

I' m going to contact the hosting company next and see what they have to say.

I' ll repost once I have further direction from the source.

Thanks again for your patience and assistance.

Regards,

Dave

caywind -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/13/2003 13:21:47)

Dave, I thought we were working on a local server here! If this is an error coming from a hosting company then the extension problem is definitely on their end and can' t be remedied by you.

Dave Brethauer -> RE: Server error: Error 2... (3/14/2003 15:12:47)

Caywind, Doug, thanks for your assistance. I apologize for not being more specific with my work platform. I contacted the hosting company and while they' ve not responded with any particular fix - I can now access the site!

So I' m back in business! However it looks like in XP/FP2002 there are now a number of problems with my site that I now need to address.

So I' ll get back to my research and remember to keep this forum upmost in my mind!

THanks,

Dave
