They probably used a graphics program, such as Photoshop.

Such programs have a series of tools, including something called a " magic wand" to " extract" an image from it' s original background. You can also use what' s known as a " mask" to select areas you want to stay, and those you want to be deleted. The extracted photo would remain on one " layer."

A second layer would be added, then " filled" with a " gradient," in this case blue to white were used.

If these terms are unfamiliar to you, check the Help file associated with a graphic program you may have. Some related terms to search:

- feathering

- selection

- highlighting

- erasing

- transparency

Of course, you' re welcome to come back and ask additional questions. I' ve found that there' s always someone here to help and lead you in the right direction.

Hi aaparty,

If you are referring to the formal table setting, that is an actual photograph. Many companies hire top photographers to shoot pics such as this...

But as Gail said, yes you can achieve something very similar with Photoshop or other sophisticated graphics programs.

This would not be easily achieved by a novice, but could be done...

Which graphics program do you have?

Try the quick mask mode; something has to be selected for it to work. You can toggle back and forth between the mask mode and regular view to see what you' ve selected.

Increasing the percentage over 100% (zooming in) will help when you try to work with more intricate than straight lines.

Make selections using some of other selection tools, such as the pencil and paintbrush. Use a specific tool' s menu features to add and subtract selected areas. Make sure you reduce your photos to the size you want it to appear on the website BEFORE you begin to tweak them. And always work on a copy of the original.

At times you may want to set " feathering," but not always.

It is impossible to explain all the steps here so I highly recommend you use Photoshops HELP to learn more about some of these methods and tools. In actuality, lifting certain objects from their backgrounds can be easy but you need patience, not to mention practice. You may also want to review the help files on " Extract."

You may have to zoom into your image 300 - 400% and carefully clean up the edges by erasing one pixel at a time. Use the eraser tool or, if a color is involved, the paintbrush or pencil tool.

I' m assuming when you say line you mean a selected area. I' m uploading an image from Photoshop 7. Make sure the upper icon (highlighted in yellow) is selected. Your cursor will change to an arrow when you place it within the selected area. Move the area around by clicking and dragging or use the up, down, back and forth arrows on the keyboard.

For some things you may want the Snap To feature turned on, for others it may be better to shut it off. View menu > Snap to.
