Hi,

I have one domain hosted on a virtual server (say www.myweb.com). The web is hosted on a Linux-server with Apache and FrontPage 2002 Extensions. I work with FP client 2002.

I created a subweb - say www.myweb.com/subweb/

If I try to use FP issues (e.g. search engine or forum) in the subweb, I receive an error message, saying that the FP Extesions aren' t installed. My Hosting Provider told me that it is impossible to get the FP extesions to work in the subwebs, but only in the root-web I own...

I posted the same questions a month ago and someone told me that my provider' s answer is false; I mean it too! Is there someone who is able to tell me what my provider has to do, in oder to " enable" FP Extensions in the subweb?

I have not personally come accross this situation although I more or less always use Linux servers, though I have seen it mentioned here before in relation to certain server configurations.

My understanding is that it is not directly a server extensions thing but that a FrontPage patch for APache must be installed in these instances. This would usually be done at the time of installing the extensions but if it is not this is one of the problems that can arise.

I don' t know a lot about this, so I could be way off here, but it might be worth checking if that patch has been installed.

Thank you for your answer, I will try to speakt about your hint with my provider.

May be that there ist a big configuration problem on the server: I can publish the root-web from FP, but if I try to include my subweb or I try to publish the subweb alone, I become an error message (" There was a problem authorizing against the server..." ). I developed a work-around to publish the subweb (I use FTP!). My provider tried himself to publish a subweb from FP, succesfully!

I guess that the two problems are connected: I don' t have the permission to create a subweb from FP and the FP Ext. don' t have the " permissions" to " propagate" to the subweb... May be the problem hast with the patch to do...

I just did this to test. Linux, FP. Here' s my steps:


  • In the Linux control panel I create a subdomain.
  • Now when I open the parent web in Frontpage , I can see a new folder with that subdomain name.
  • I right click on the new folder, hit " Convert to Web"
  • I can now open a web at: http://subdomain. maindomain.com using my main password.
  • I can go to Tools, Security, and set up new, passworded user accounts there with the various permissions
  • and last but not least, all of the FrontPage extension features work...

It is the " Convert to Web" step that enables the extensions on a subweb!

I found a paper telling that in order to create subwebs you need root permissions on the server... Only the provider is also able to create a subweb - since I don' t think he would tell me his root-password ;-)

Yeah, that' s where the control panel is.

A" Sub Domain" & a " Sub Web" are really the same - boith are nothing more than directories under the root of the main site. The difference is a " Sub Domain" has a record in the DNS that redirects http://sub.domain.com/ to http://domain.com/sub/

No - you need root premissions for YOUR account. On a *nix server this is no problem - WIN servers are another story.

Ok, I understand. May be the paper told about NT issues and not *nix issues.

But now my question is: the provider told me that I am root on my root-space - but if I try do create a subweb I become the error message " error authorising against web server" ...

The provider told me that the only parameter he can set for my root-web is the " root" ... and he set it to me...

What is he doing wrong?

How do I come to the control panel on the server... I have an interface to the server, but I can' t create folders... Should I connect to the server with ftp and create a folder?

My web-site is on a server by a Hosting Provider. He only have the right to upload files, set ftp accounts, e-mail accounts and so on... The FrontPage Extensions are installed.

I connect from home via ftp or via " publish" (FrontPage feature).

I' m not the owner of the whole server, I have only one 100MB quota.

Your control panel (you should have a URL for your control panel, something like: http://yourdomain.com:####), doesn' t have a way to create a new directory? No " File Manager? Strange...

OK, you can connect via ftp or telnet and creat a directory under your root.

Then open your site " live" in Frontpage - Within FP " Open" type in the FULL URL *http://yourdomain.com/ - you should see the directory you created. Then just follow Caywinds steps from the post above...

I followed your hints.

Now - when I am live and I try to " convert to web" I receive the same error message as above... What I did is

1. clean my root folder
2. open the web-site with ftp and create a new folder " subweb" under public_html; disconnect
3. open the root-web-site live with FP, on the server
4. right click on the folder " subweb" -> " convert to web"

at this point I receive one error message, the same as above... I don' t have the permission to convert the folder...

I use linux and on mine I can just file> publish web
and when it asks for the domain I
type mydomain.com/subweb
it will say there is no web at that address would you like to create one
say yes
and it creates the folder and publishes the subweb to the subweb folder.
