Enforcing others to NOT link to you? - 3/21/2003 9:11:21
Strange request I guess. My rankings for my keywords are just fine and because I have so many sites, there are terms where my sites are listed numbers 1-10 and 12 - 15 on MSN. Now, there is a cool new trend. People are linking to me... from where they come I know not, nor do I want them linking to me. Why? The description for my site on their link pages are ranking them close to (and in some cases higher than) my sites. Now, how can you ENFORCE someone NOT to link to your site???

Hi I don' t follow - surely getting a higher ranked site to link to you (at least in the eyes of Google) is a good thing and will improve your page rank, and if you' re selling something then the links will produce sales on your site rather than the site that is doing the linking. Maybe I' m missing something. Cheers Andy

Hi, Summer - As Andy said, their ranking and linking to you can only improve your rankings.... unless they are linking to get search terms that have only to do with your site and not theirs? ie. your name or business name I understand their links to you being a part of their SEO plans, but those individual links are a very small part. If they were to take off the link, they still obviously have other things they are doing or they would not be ranking as high as they are. You can ask them to remove the links to your site and they probably won' t have a problem with that. If you feel they are truly trying to scam business from you, you could report it to Google if they won' t take off the links. Linda

I am asking to be removed from many. The problem is that I sell weightloss products to breastfeeding moms, and most of these places are selling things like Xencial that should never be taken by breastfeeding moms and there is NO reason for them to be linking to me. Very frustrating because they ARE getting unqualified traffic (that should be mine lol).

The description for my site on their link pages are ranking them close to (and in some cases higher than) my sites. Summer - Link text surrounding a hyperlink supposedly benefits the site the hyperlink is pointing to not the host site. Recently, in another forum, Search Engine Specialist Danny Sullivan said that " text in or near the link is taken into account as part of link analysis" . Meaning, when a search engine looks at the sites pointing toward yours, they may take into account the text around your hyperlink and include any keywords in their algorithm. Those keywords are benefiting your link and your ranking. Not the host site. I think it' s doubtful that the site hosting your link is benefiting from the link text used to describe your site. If they have higher Page Rank ( PR) than you do it' s because they have more links with decent PR pointing at their site. If it were me and the link were relevant, I' d want sites with higher PR pointing at mine. That' s what determines Page Rank and helps your site increase in it' s link popularity. Suggestion? Consider a proactive offering of link verbiage. Obviously these sites feel your website has quality information that may benefit their viewer ( or they wouldn' t link to you!). To help them with linking and to give your site maximum leverage, write a keyword rich hyperlink and descriptive verbiage and put it on your site under a " How To Link To Us" page. People will be grateful you' ve done the work for them and will probably use this link over creating one on their own. You benefit from the keywords and hyperlink, they save time and offer quality content. Win-win for all! Debra.

They may have copied your keywords or content to get your traffic but how does a link TO you get them your traffic?? If you have them remove the links to you, YOUR search engine position may suffer.

Again, my main concern is that these people are bringing in traffic with words like " weightloss while breastfeeding" , " postpartum weightloss" , " breastfeeding diet" , and their sites are usually websites with little to no info on it, and concentrate on weightloss drugs. Now, my link is buried in a page of links, so chances are the people will go there looking for one thing and get lost without even finding the link for me (most often, I can only find my link with the CTRL+F search). Any body understand what I mean? [:j]

Again, my main concern is that these people are bringing in traffic with words like " weight-loss while breastfeeding" , " postpartum weightloss" , " breastfeeding diet" , and their sites are usually websites with little to no info on it, and concentrate on weightloss drugs. Now, my link is buried in a page of links, so chances are the people will go there looking for one thing and get lost without even finding the link for me (most often, I can only find my link with the CTRL+F search). Any body understand what I mean Yes, I think I now understand what you' re saying. But I still maintain what I said before and below. People looking for weightloss products might indeed be looking for your type. They may find the link, they may not. But the search engine WILL find the link. IMO, you swap links or look for one-way links for all these reasons: 1. Increase link popularity 2. Increase your site' s spiderablilty 3. Increase traffic 4. Offer balanced and complementary information for your users. If your site is benefiting from a one way link from a site with decent page rank and it' s within your theme, then who cares where your link is placed? They are not asking you for a link back. Unless these sites are offensive to you from a content standpoint, I' d leave the links alone. Or, ask them to revise the link verbiage with optimized link verbiage you send them. Help any?
